It is the only one museum of its kind in Crete, about 5 km south of Irakleio, near Knossos. You see there effigies of animals, collections of plants, fossils, beds of rock, photos. A small botanical garden is at the courtyard of the building.

AGIOS NIKOLAOS

A pretty town, capital of the prefecture of Lassith since 1904. Situated in the gulf of Mirambelo. It has a good harbor with a pier known from the time of the Venetian occupation as Porto Di San Nicolo.

In the center of the town there is a deep lake now called Voulismeni. In this lake, according to mythology, Athena used to bathe. In the old days it was separate from the sea. The canal that links it with the sea was built in 1867 – 1871. Spratt, speaking about the lake said that the people living the thought it was bottomless and communicated with the evil spirits. The lake is 61 meters long and 21 meters wide, the canal was built whilst Kostas Adhosidis was governor.

In the region where the prefecture is today, during the Venetian occupation was the castle of Merambelo. The castle was built by the Genoese. It was badly damaged by the earthquake of 1303.

Heraklion, sea and sun

Heraklion is a fishing village gone large, even in todays modern city you can walk a few minutes from the center of town and meet fishermen working their nets.

You can also enjoy a visit to the Venetian fortress of Koule which crouches over the harbor here in Heraklion.

Or just take a stroll along the jetty where the sea waves strike the stones put up to protect the harbor. We were there on a quiet day with small waves, but on a more stormy day I can just imagine seeing, hearing and FEELING the waves crashing...The unimaginable strong ocean trying to beat the immovable stone.

Most of this page is about Hersonissos. We landed in Chania, stayed one day, then left for Hersonissos. Since we were island hopping we thought of staying only a couple of days, then leave for Santorini. Well, plans are made to be changed. I made my buddy blind, by accident in a p*ss drunk state, when I threw him a brochure. Papercuts in the eye is not fun. Usually... Anyway, we met a lot of Norwegian friends in Hersonissos, partied a lot, and left for Santorini after 8 days. Fun place, you can say. My buddy got his sight back after about a week.
