Dance!Cretan dancing is known...

by anniina

Dance!Cretan dancing is known for its vitality. A famous Cretan dance is the Pentozali. The Pentozali, danced throughout Crete, was done by armed warriors during ancient times. The rhythm is provided by a Cretan lyre and the dancers, holding hands, start dancing slowly in a circle. As the music quickens, so do the steps and the dance reaches a frenzy speed, ending suddenly when the lyre does.

Another well-known dance is the Syrtos. The Syrtos is lead by a dancer who skilfully and energetically leads the group. The leader provides the initiative for the dance and will do a variety of complicated steps, while being supported by the line of backup dancers, doing more mild steps.

by Rieke

On our last day, just 'by accident', we had the best encounter of our stay ! We were driving around, to take some more pictures, and when I left the car to take a photo of a cactus, I heard some voices shouting something in Greek. I turned around and saw two elderly people making signs to come. Curious as I am, I did not hesitate and walked through the fence. They were making signs with their heads and hands towards the corner of the garden. I had to go there and take pictures. As I came closer to the corner, I saw a kind of very small open 'shower base', where 3 people stood barefoot, crushing grapes !
They started laughing when they saw my face, total unbelief ! Very friendly, they immediately handed me 3 bunches of grapes and asked me to take pictures, if I wanted ! Of course, I did not hesitate ! You can see some more pictures in my travelogue !

KNOSSOS

by Juliet67

Constructed on a largely man-made hill, Knossos is the largest, most solidly-built and impressive of the island's Minoan palaces.

It had a total area of 22,000 square metres and sustained a population of between 80,000 and 100,000 people. Excavations began when Minos Kalokairinos, a native of the city, began experimental digs in the palace area.
However, systematic excavations were not begun until Sir Arthur Evans arrived in 1900. The controversial reconstruction that Evans supervised was deemed necessary because of the extreme depth of the site.

The palace was confusing due to its multitude of layers--each period of settlement had been built on top of the previous one. The remains seen today are mainly those of the New Palace Period of around 1700 B.C.
