Books to read while you travel to Ioannina #1
by Georgio
THE UNWRITTEN PALCES by by Tim Salmon (£9.95). Everybody at the Hellenic loved this; a really evocative piece of writing with the author gleefully joining the 'Dhiava', the annual trek made by the Vlach shepherds of northern Epirus, close to the border with Albania. I would recommend this book to anybody interested in everyday life in Greece as it shows the rural life which is sadly disappearing as the children understandably become increasingly reluctant to take up this way of life. Wonderful.
Metsovo (page to come)
by JLBG
Metsovo is a mountain village standing at an elevation of 1,160 meters, 56 km east to Ioannina. Its population is mostly Arumanian and thus, besides Greek, speaks a Rumanian dialect. Though it is now visited during the day by loads of tourists, in the evening it has kept a great part of its special aspect and life.
The madrassa
by JLBG
A hundred meters away from Aslan Pasha mosque, the madrassa was an Islamic school. It is now the Ioannina museum of Popular Art. We were short of time and did not visit it but I have read that it had interesting Epire artifacts. The building itself is a nice piece of architecture.
Litharitsa castle
by StefanosS
It is sited at the centre of Ioannina, near the Archaeological Museum. It was initially built as palace by Ali-pasha who made Ioannina his seat.
It was much larger, including two more palaces for his sons. One of them was at the place of the Military Head-Quarters and the other at the place of the Archaeological museum. Englishmen W.M.Leake and Holland give descriptions of the three palaces. They were destroyed in 1821, when Hursit-pasha defeated Ali-pasha. Only part of the Walls and the basements were preserved.
The founder of the Society for Epirotic Studies restored the cluster, that nowadays is functioning as recreation centre.
