I love the picturesque little island in the middle of the lake, the place where Ali Pasha, the little Napoleon of the late Ottoman Empire was killed in 1822, the magnificent frescoes of the Medieval Monastery of Philanthropinon there. And of course the smell of of fried trout or fried legs, when at last feel hungry, drunk with local wine in a Sunday afternoon. The feeling of the first sight of Ioannina valley withits Lake when you come from the Pindos Mantains, already visited the mountainous little town of Metsovo, just before, after a happy meal with local lamp meat and smoked cheese.
The silence of Dodona valley, the most ancient oracle of Ancient Greece and the ancient theater of King Pyrros of Epirus, the first and the only Greek that faced victoriously, the ascending superpower of Roman Empire, I feel like hearing the ancient blind poet Homer whispering and praying 'Zeus, God of Dodona...'
Ioannina Tip
by Georgio
There is something particular in the air of this city. Shady, rainy, humid and immersed in the melancholic mist that came out of the mysterious waters of lake Pamvotis during the winter... In the summer it transforms into a romantic, voluptuous maid and seems that the ghosts of Ali Pasha and lady Frosyni fly over the shady alleys of the city.... In the summer evenings, the 'passegiata' is filled of belly-exposing, young black eyed ladies with long black hairs and milky skin, that seem to rise right from oriental fairy-tales of love, passion and … lust(!).... One and one thousand nights in Ali Pasha's Ioannina! :)
The picturesque island
by matza
On the north of the lake "Pamvotis" we have the picturesque island, where almost 120 families are living at the traditional village with the narrow roads and the courtyards full of flowers. The island is connected to the city on a daily basis with small boats, since it is only ten minutes away.
The area of the Island in the Lake of Ioannina was a monastic site during the Byzantine period. Seven more monasteries dating from several periods are preserved on the Island but the monastery of Agios Nikolaos seems to be the most important of all.

CAVE OF IOANNINA--Four kilometres north of Ioannina is the delightful village of Perama, with its famous cave. The most notable horizontal cave in the Balcans, with a passage over one kilometre long, it comprises several chambers and lambyrithine passages with spectacular stalagmites and stalactites. The greek speleologists, I. and A.Petrocheilos, found bones and teeth of the cave-bear here, the first such discovery in Greece.
Trip to Nisaki Kyra Frosyni
by JLBG
Small boats propose trips to Nisaki Kyra Frosyni (islet of Kyra Frosyni), shorten as “Nisaki”, (little island) by locals. Departures are every 30 minutes from 6:30 AM to midnight. The trip is about 12 minutes.
Living on the island is a privilege and nobody can establish other than the families that have always lived there. They own the restaurants and shops for tourists but are also fishermen.
In the busy restaurants, you will find plenty of sea-food, sorry, lake-food : freshly caught fish, mainly eel and carp, bathrakos (frogs), karabedi (cray fish) and others.
Several Monasteries stand on the island.
One of these is the Monastery of the Prodhromos (St. John the Baptist) to the east of the little island hamlet. Its most ancient parts (13C) are the katholikon and the east aisle. It was restored in the 16th and its the 18th frescoes in the 19th.
Ali Pasha was killed on 17 January 1822 in neighboring Monastery of Pantaleimon, dating from the 16th.
Another monastery is Monastery of Agios Nikolaos Philanthropenon.
The whole island is registered by the Greek Archeological Service as a place of archeological significance.
