The variety of the formations

the largest cave of Greece
Perama is a small village 4km away from Ioannina at NW Greece. The village is famous because of the cave that was founded there during the 2nd world war by accident while the inhabitants were trying to find a place to hide when the german planes bombed the area! The one that found the cave supposed to saw a bear coming out of it! He’s not alive anymore but his bairns live in the village. The cave is located at the Goritsa hill, just over the village and from there you have a great view of the lake and Ioannina city.
Konstantinos Kasvikis, an amateur speleologist took photos of it after the war. Because of the photos the cave was explored by the famous speleologists Giannis and Anna Petrochilos. It became the first cave in Greece that opened to the public. The rooms inside are filled with stalactites and stalagmites with several different colors and shapes. Most of the caves have about 10 different kinds of stalactites but here you can find 19. The visitors can walk about 1.100m but it’s much bigger though.
If you have some time you can spend some time at the village too. In the past it was a small farmer village but now you can find many hotels, taverns and gift shops. The central church is Agios Charalampos that was built in 1960.
Perama is only 4km away from the center of Ioannina, at NW side of Pamvotida lake. Just drive at the national road Ioannina-Trikala. There is also a local bus from Ioannina center.
PERAMA - Prefecture of Ioannina
Perama village is at a distance of 4km from the city of Ioannina. An underground stream grossing the chalky rock created a cave under Goritsa hill 2,000,000 years ago. It was discovered in 1940 and during WWII bombing it was used as a refuge.
The touristic exploitation of this cave changed a small farmers' settlement to a beautiful village with hotels, restaurants, taverns and popular art shops. The scenery of Ioannina and the lake is very beautiful.

In 1951-52 the first exploration of its interior was undertaken and in 1954 Petrocheilos couple (John and Anna) conducted a systematic exploration and mapping. It was the first Greek cave made known and touristically exploited since 1956. It is believed that there are more unexplored areas in it. In the cave there were found bones of a cave-bear dated 600,000 years ago.
