Getting from Serres to Kavala

by asteritta

Hello everybody!
I planning a trip from Sofia to Thassos using public transport :( My research shows that the most efficient way is to break it into routese Sofia - Serres (there are busses available), Serres - Kavala and then Kavala- Thassos.
Could anybody tell me where to find the timetable for busses from Srees to Kavala and how long the journey takes?
Thanks a lot in advance!

I'm answering in English and not in Bulgarian, as other travelers might also have difficulties in navigating the unnavigable and often non-existent Greek-language transportation websites.
There appears to be a direct Eurolines bus from Sofia to Kavala on Wed and Sat at 11:30. Inquire locally about its existence, Eurolines is not always up to the "European" quality with regards to its schedules.
There are many buses from Sofia to different places in Northern Greece. The safest choice is to travel with a change in Thessaloniki. A number of Bulgarian buses call at Thessaloniki and there are hourly services to Kavala, according to a number of websites, including this one:
http://www.kavalanet.gr/town/transportation.shtml
The Thessaloniki-Kavala section is the upper one to the right. The price was reported to be about 10 euro, the travel time 2:15 hours.
Getting off in Serres will save money and backtracking but I could not find any information about buses to Kavala. 100km should take about 1 1/2 hours. There should be some, at least to Drama, where you can board the every-other-hourly bus to Kavala, if you are willing to do so many changes. Phone numbers can be easily googled, but I don't know whether you will be able to talk to them in English in Serres and Kavala. When in Kavala, you might consider taking a bus to Keramoti (if any) and taking the more frequent ferries there. It all depends on where on Thassos you will be staying, as the ferries land at different villages. As far as I know, there are no buses on Thassos, other VT members should correct me if I'm wrong.

Hope that helps

You can find a Catholic Church (St. Paul's) in the city centre (Kyprou st. 6). Even if at the tourist informatoin they don't know anything about it, there is a Mass on Sunday morning at 10am. Call the number +3051223163 to get up-to-date information about that.

If it happens to be in the region, visit the ancient Greek city of Philippi. The most important archaeological site is located near Krinides in the 17th km of the National Road Kavala-Drama.You will see the the Acropolis, the Theatre, traces of the old Egnatia Road, the Roman Forum and remains of the Christian Basilicas .

In city centre of Kavala is many interesting and beautifull buildings and palaces from early 20. century. Most of them some kind of public buildings but I didn't find what their purpose are. Anyway, it's nice to be around...

Old town architecture

by prleprle

Panagia is old quarter of Kavala around castle on small peninsula. Panagia gains its name after medieval church dedicated to Virgin Mary. Streets are narrow and coblestoned and very vivid. Houses are mostly twostored and built in typical Balkan style with strong Turkish influence. Very interesting is Imaret, an old Turskish style building with 18 domes that overlooks the harbour. Nowdays there are really fine and cheap restaurant.

Modern and medieval Greece

"Harbour and Acropolis"

The harbour is the place for evening strolls, all the restaurants and bars are in this area. Don't miss tasting fresh fish! In the centre of the picture you can see the Acropolis, a medieval fortress. You can climb the bastions and have a great 360° view of the town. On the opposite side of the town there is also a church on the top of a hill, from where you can have a wonderful view.
