Hellenic Lager

Let’s make no secret of it. We both like a nice cold glass of beer. Being abroad is always a challenge to find a beer we like, which reflects our taste of having a beer. At Corfu (maybe the entire country of Greece) it was sometimes rather difficult. We found out that there are quite some local beers, only known in that particular area. But anyway, we kind of liked the Hellenic Lager.

This 5% abv beer is brewed in Greece by the Heineken-owned Athenian Brewery and was relaunched in its home country just three years ago. The beer has received positive feedback, because it is not a bad lager at all, much better than most 'mass' produced lagers in the world. Its has a good head, but retention is low... The aroma is of crisp dew grass and light skunky hops. It tasted refreshing with a touch of crispness. It had some muddled flavours, so it's a bit of average stuff. But good enough to drink it cold in the hot sun!

This is a small café near the sea, facing the central square in Kassiopi village. Pics show where the place is. It was kind of empty during april but I can imagine the place packed during the summer months.

So, we enjoyed the calm atmosphere, actually they were just opened the place for the new season (it was early april when we got there so the masses of tourists hadn’t arrived yet), the staff was very friendly but I don’t know much about their menu as we just took a cold frappe coffee (2e), a cold chocolate(2.50e) and a lemonade(2e)

mposketo park and Panagia Mandrakina church

I noticed this nice church (pic 1) next to the small park that is at the right side of the palace. It’s Panagia Mandrakina church which is dedicated to the Virgin Mary and Saint Panteleimon. It was built in the 18th century with a nice symmetric exterior (I like the bell tower) but the back side of the church seems that want to jump in the water!(pic 2) :) The church was damaged during the WWII but hopefully it was restored 5 years later. The church took this name because there was a “miracle” icon of Virgin Mary that was supposed to be found in the area where the tiny Mandraki port is by local fishermen.

But it was closed most of the times I passed from there so we preferred to go to Mposketo park, a small park which is actually the municipal garden of the city. It has a fountain and two huge stone benches (pic 3) where people can rest for a while (we did) and admire the beautiful view that the parks offers towards the old fortress (pic 4). I noticed many families with small kids that were playing at the playground.

At the entrance of the park is a sign that reads: Mposketto Durrell(Lawrence & Gerald Durrell) writers & philhellenes lived in Corfu 1935-1939. There are several statues here and there like the one of Mavilis(greek writer), Guilford’s(made by K.Apergis in 1883), etc

Probably the most frustrating thing about our trip, was travelling by car and looking for places, with all these different spellings.
We travelled for an hour looking for Corfu centre, then we found out they spell it Kerkyra. Its out fault - of course!

"Sand , sea, beaches and food"

These waters are an emerald green colour, not terribly warm, the beaches '' sand is course and dark. lots of pebbles. The weather is glorious, food is great and not expensive, people friendly, nightlife vibey.
