Delicate scent!
by JLBG
If you are not familiar with the Mediterranean, you will not be able to name that plant, though you are most likely to use it as a condiment. It grows on cracks of rocks and the flowers have a delicate and strong scent. Something close to vanilla and chocolate but that will not help! The buds are the capers that are used as pickles. The bush is Capparis spinosa (yes, mind, it is spiny!)
Sidari - Square with the St. Nicholas Church.
by Jerelis
We first visited the village square and park with the local St. Nicholas Church. Some of the flowers we saw were stunning and the park was very well maintained. Maybe it looked like a small reproduction of Espianada Park of Corfu Town. The St. Nicholas Church is a bit of a mystery, because the exact date of construction is unknown. Hand written documents calles "Miniea" (found in the city of Venice, Italy) suggest that it already existed in the 16th century.
The P shape of the monks' cells nearby show that it used to be a monestary. One of the cells was an olive oil press and the huge stone used in making the olive oil is now the base of the flag pole in the beautiful park. We walked in it and enjoyed the starting hours of the beautiful day.
The center of Sidari is a hive of activity with a variety of both day and night entertainment. Not excactly what we were looking for, but still the abundance of shops, bars and restaurants so every no and then is charming.
Ioniki Bank and Coin Museum
by mindcrime
The Museum of Coins in Corfu Town was founded by Ionian Bank in 1981. If you visit the two churches (Faneromeni & Ioannis Prodromos) at Plakada tou Agiou you may want to stop here too. The museum is housed in a building that was designed by the local architect Ioannis Chronis. Its collections is several coins, banknotes that were released after the liberation of Greece, banknotes from other countries, stamps, bank documents and books. There is also a laboratory for representation of the modern way of making money.
When we saw the old drachmas banknotes we started to realize how much life have changed here since the euro arrival…
It is open 8.30-15.00.
