Hiking - Discover the many trails.
by Jerelis
If you like hiking, Corfu is close to paradise! Walking and admiring the beautiful scenery is one of the most popular activities with visitors today. When walking the inland of the island we discovered the real Corfu. Villagers sitting chatting outside door steps or having a coffee at the local kafeneion. It was amazing and such afun! We had quite some hike spread out over the island and we discovered its many trails. Ancient tracks link villages, passing through a multitude of natural wonders and slipping by forgotten history left hidden in the woods.
A very good initiative is The Corfu Trail Foundation. This is a non/profit organisation that has created and waymarked a trail and makes every effort towards good maintenance and new infrastructure. The trail is about 220 kilometers long and is very well signposted. It avoids heavily developed areas and we walked some parts of it and especially liked some of the ancient olive trees. Have a look at Corfu Packing List.

Panagia Tenedos church is a historican catholic church located near the New Fortress. It is known as Panagia Tenedos because after the occupation of Tenedos island by the turks some francs monks transferred an icon of Virgin Mary in Corfu.
The official name is Catholic church of Blessed Virgin of Carmel. It was built in 1663 in order to house a catholic study area for catholics. The church was damaged during the turk siege in 1716 and the church was consecrated again in 1749 from the bishop Antonio Nani. At the main entrance you can see a nice sculptural depiction of the venetian lions and several coats of arms of famous venetians families.
The French (1797-1799) settled here the first public library on the island, which later formed into the basis of Ionian Academy library (but destroyed by Nazis during WWII). In 1804 the church housed a public school (with Kapodistrias in charge)
The church celebrates on july 16, every year, the icon of Virgin of Carmel is at the sanctuary.
