Things to do on Corfu Island

by 235wiseowl

We are spending a week in Dassia on Corfu, never been before. Any suggestions on where to visit as a must! Would like information on eating and drinking places, we know this area is expensive

Paleokastritsa (west side) is a must for the beauty of the place. Corfutown is fun at night, restaurants (great mud coffee to finish a good meal!) and bars. The whole island is beautiful to drive around. Tavernas where they serve roast chicken and French Fries and Greek salad were great when I was there. The traditional type food was a bit oily but delicious. Roasts were always good. Apricots are the best!
My info is way dated but I suppose the island is as beautiful as it was way back then. I loved Corfu. Have fun!

We spent two weeks in the area last summer-mainly by sailboat going from island to island--you MUST rent scooters (if at all possible for you) and travel the island for a day-it was one of the best days we spent traveling to monasteries and ruins of castles really taking in the sights, smelling the air, feeling the breezes, stopping at little places to eat, and talking with local people. Really was a great way to see the sights. I had never driven a scooter before-and survived with a smile and wonderful memories. We actually found Greece to be very reasonably priced--bought pastries and bread from bakeries in the am, add cheese, tomatoes, olives, fruit and possibly wine from local little groceries for lunch, and dinner we always ate in a restaurant-wonderful food and within our budget.

Corfu is a fantastic island. There is so much to see and do.

Spend a couple of hours sitting in the liston drinking coffee and people watching, early evening is best. Just linger over your drinks they are more expensive here, but you go for the atmosphere.

You're really close to Gouvia (you can walk along the main road if you feel energetic it will take approx. 45 mins but a taxi would be better at night) and visit Aries taverna there, Gouvia is a tourist resort but this taverna is what greece is all about. We got married in corfu last year and they did us a fantastic reception, lovely, lovely people.

Paleo is also a must the scenery is simply stunning, just mind the hills!

I am sure you will have a fab time just remember that the greeks do things differently than we do, and although corfu is a bit more developed than other greek islands it is still very much greek, and everything goes slowly, slowly.

Travel Tips for Corfu Island

Mama's Restaurant, Sidari

by cyprus4holidays

This was our favourite place to eat - for our evening meal & our breakfast. It was the best value for money restaurant and we visited it time and again.

The Chicken Carbonara is to die for and the lager glasses are kept in the deep freeze. Perfect for a nice cold beer :-) Our trip to Paleokastritsa by jeep, in the pouring rain. It was raining so hard we couldn't see where we were going.

All of a sudden, the sky cleared and we were in the most perfect place to look down on a gorgeous resort, consisting of 3 bays with golden sand and azure sea. Perfect!

fast food restaurant

by mindcrime about MIC MAC

One of the most popular fast food corners because of its good location at the back side of Liston. There are some tables outside but also on the first floor (too hot there).

It has the obvious (souvlaki and sandwiches) so we tried giros with chicken (2.2e) which was big but mediocre, souvlaki (1.5e each) which was served with fried potatoes and bread (for free). If you try the souvlaki portion you will pay 7.5e which is too much. Just try what the greeks eat, the usual Gyros or souvlaki or chicken on pitta (2.2e). They also serve sandwich with souvlaki(3.3e) but it’s very big.

They also serve breakfast (2 eggs with sausage 5e), omelettes with jam or cheese(4,8e), with mushrooms/sausage(5.5e), with feta cheese(5.7e), special omelette(7e), small dishes like tzatziki / cheesesalad(2.9e), chickensalad/tuna salad(3.7e), fried potatoes(2e), feta cheese(2.5e). The salads aren’t special but you can choose between simple ones (lettuce/cucumber/tomato or greek salad) to more complicated like Caesar (5.9e), roka/parmesan(5.9e), Chef’s(5.6e). We tried the one with roka and it was a big disappointment although we shouldn’t have great expectations here.

There are some spaghetti dishes (4.5e-6.8e), pork or veal chop(7.7e) and some pizzas (4-6e)

The WC was one of the dirtiest in town.

Benitses village, Corfu

by apekovic

Small tourist village of Benitses is located just 12 km. south from the city of Corfu (Kerkyra). During the summer, Benitses welcomes a lot of tourists. There is a few hotels and number of apartment buildings as well as a numerous caffeterias, taverns and discoteques. Near Benitses is famous Achillion palace museum.

Corfu Island... impressive!

by Joseph69

"Glyfada Beach"

Great beach for a swim, seeing the sunset as it faces west and having a cocktail/meal.

Briefly, Corfu is the most northern island of the Ionian Group and lies at the entrance of the Adriatic Sea. It is a mountainous island with impressive landscapes, dense vegetation due to the many winter rainfalls, long golden sandy beaches, many traditional villages, Byzantine churches, several museums, impressive Venetian fortresses and some great resorts spread all around the island.

To get to Corfu, there are many ways. You can fly direct from many other cities in Europe, or you can get a ferry (more like a ship) from Italy, or you can drive to Igoumenitsa in Greece's northwest then get a ferry to Corfu, or you can fly on a domestic flight from Athens.

Glyfada Beach is not far from the main town of Kerkyra. Expect around a 25 minute drive/ride.

"Glyfada Beach restaurant/bar"

We danced here from 3pm until sunset, all in our swimmers!

"Sunset on the eastern side"

Taken from close to the town of Kerkyra, on the eastern side of the island of Corfu.
