corfu savers?

by jessicah666

hi guys!
thinking of booking a last minute cheap deal to corfu. The website only details the accomodation as 'corfu savers' it's with Argo holidays. Anyone any idea what this might be like or where it may be on Corfu?

You will be given whatever accommodation in whatever location (through cancellation or lack of bookings) the travel company has. It's a gamble, but one perhaps worth taking if the price is very good.

You may strike very lucky indeed, as ranger49 did, or you may end up in a noisier/more touristy place than you might otherwise have chosen. It's highly unlikely that you'll have an unpleasant accommodation experience if the holiday is offered through a reliable agent (Argos are a long-established firm, I think).

Argo Holidays are the upmarket brand for Thomsons, so you could strike lucky :0)

Travel Tips for Corfu Island

Sinarades - Lot of great old houses and mansions.

by Jerelis

Sinarades is built on a hillside covered with olive and almond trees. The water from the mountain springs collects in a small river at the base of the hillside, a river that once divided the village in two. We definately liked to stroll over its narrow paths and through the embossed entrances. Besides that we noticed a lot of great old houses and mansions with small terraces and marble stairs. And what to think about the beautiful churches with high and elegant belfries?

Something else that is irreplaceable is the Sinarades Folkloric Museum. It was established in 1982, is one of the best in Greece and the only one on the island of Corfu. Housed in a former two-storey house and run almost entirely on local donations. A minimal entrance fee gains you entry to a guided tour by 78-year-old Theodora and she speaks impeccable English. The museum houses rare exhibits and items belonging to the rural households of the area.

Village of Sinarades

Situated at the middle west side of the island. It is a 25 km drive from the capital of Corfu, Corfu Town.

St George’s church in Old Fortress

by mindcrime

St.George church was built in 1840 and it looks like an ancient temple (pic 1) as it has Doric columns in front! This weird church was built by the british army. The church is closed but opens only one day each year, on Great Friday when the procession of the epitaphios takes place (see local customs). It used to be an anglican church but turned into an orthodox one after the reunion when the old temple from Agios Spyridon church transferred here.

So, as during Great Friday we choosed to be in Old Town we just checked the church exterior, took some pics of the church and the bell(pic2) and then wondered along the fortress outer walls (pic 3). It’s hard to do but try to imagine that there was a period that the city out of the fortress didn’t exist…

You can reach the St George church even when the entrance for the top of the Old Fortress is closed, so there’s no entrance fee.

beaches in Corfu

by mindcrime

There are some really nice beaches all over Corfu. As we came here it wasn’t first priority for us but we really enjoyed visiting some of them as they were empty and peaceful, not even local families were there.

We didn’t stay too long in each beach but we noticed that there are some shaded by large trees beaches but most of them are really under the sun. Even, in beaches with no facilities you will notice a lot of umbrellas and sunbeds in many of them.

At north shore try Agios Georgios, Arilla, Aharavi, Dassia, Kalami, Peroulades, Sidari kai Paleokastritsa beaches.
At South shore try the ones at Moraitika, Messoggi, Agios Georgios(6km long!), Issos, Kavos.
At West coast try the ones of Glyfada and Agios Gordios
