Local Bus

by MaryLykes

We love to take local busses. Is there a local bus on Corfu that I could take for its entire route to do a somewhat scenic or circular tour of the island? If so, what is its number and where can I board nearest to the cruise port or the centre of town?

There are two types of buses, the small local ones (blue color) that go around the main city of Corfu and suburbs as Achilleion,Perama,Ag.Ioannis.Their begging is at plateia San Rokko but there are a lot of stops all over the city so you just look for the bus sigh.I do not remember their numbers or if they have a number but the route they follow is written on their front. And of course you can always ask the driver.

For longer distances use the KTEL buses running from Theotoki str.also blue colored.

You have to know those aren't hop in hop off buses so you have to buy a different ticket for each journey.
If you use the KTEL buses pick up the most interesting places of every route and spend some time there till your next bus come.

Travel Tips for Corfu Island

Secluded spot,Paramona beach

by mickeyboy07

While driving around the countryside up and down mountains on the west side of Corfu you will pass through several villages and on to very small roads, this one particular rd was nothing more than a dirt track in most spots but we carried on driving to see where it would take us,the result is Paramona beach a very well hidden place and not something you would notice on any map.
There is a small car park and a cafe nearby and then its just you the sea and the golden sand, very peaceful and perfect if you want to get away from the crowds and spend the day relaxing.
The road down to the beach is very narrow with sharp turns but managable,as for directions i would say about ten to fifteen minutes drive west of Agios Matteos.

Corfu's most photographed Sight?!

by Zandra

The Kanoni peninsula, with the 17th century monastery for women, is Corfu's landmark and can be found on numerous postcards from the island. From the islet of Kanoni, it's possible to go by boat out to another islet - the Mouse Island "Pontikonisi" (seen on the left of the monastery islet).

In order to avoid the flocks of tourists, visit early in the morning or later in the afternoon. There are a few taverns on the hill overlooking the ocean, offering wonderful views of Kanoni/Pontikonisi and the small fishing boats nearby. This is also a good place to watch airplanes take off and land; the airport is very close!

Faneromeni and Ioannis Prodromos churches

by mindcrime

The Plakada Tou Agiou is a small square that houses 3 different churches. The most popular is Agios Spiridon but the other two also interesting. Pic 1 show them together (on the left is Faneromeni church)

Faneromeni church is three-aisle basilica from 18th century with wooden roof. It was built by monk Nikodimos(from Epirus) and it was the church for the people from Epirus region (guilds of furriers and goldsmiths that came to Corfu after the persecutions by turks in mainland). The ceiling (ourania) was painted by N. Koutouzis (18th century) I tried to take a picture but the low light condition during the mass didn’t help much (pic 2) but the atmosphere was really devout. Check also the impressive old temple, decorated with gold that was restored in 1875 by some Italians that were specialized in Rococo style. The church is also known as Panagia Ton Ksenon (Madonna of the Foreigners)

Ioannis o Prodromos church is located right next to Faneromeni church. It was built in 1480 in the typical single-aisle basilica like many other churches in Corfu. The exterior is very simple as you can see in pic 1(on the right). The temple from local marble houses images of famous painters of Creta-Corfu school like G.Hrysoloras, Tzanne etc. We were there during a mass (pic 3), the church was really packed but I had the time to check some of the paintings at the exonarthex where there are also several gravestones, one of which covers the tom of a russian captain who died in 1799. The ceiling is nice, painted by Sp.Sperantza in 1773 but it was imposible to take a pic (and I didn’t want to use the flash during the mass). The church celebrates on august 29 in honor of Saint John The Baptist but it’s also dedicated to Agia Paraskevi and Agios Dionysios
