Accomodation in Monemvasia

by Rosssella

I'm planning to go to Monemvasia from August 12th for one week.
We are 7 people (4 adults).
Any suggestion for a cheap place to stay outside the village (even a few kilometres)?

How is the see near Monemvasia?
Thanks in advance to anyone who will help me.
Ciao

Well, i have never stayed in a hotel in the area, but i have been there many times . Without doubt the best place to stay is within the castle, however the most of the hotels there are A class and relavitely expensive . If you dont find anything in the castle that fits your budget, then you have to stay in the new town right outside the castle . I think that there you can find a cheaper hotel . I cannot guarantee about its quality but i think that all the rooms there are clean and decent . What i can ensure you, though, is that it is better to choose soon because the mid-August is a very high season and it wont be easy to find rooms easily then . The rest of the area (up to 30kms) has very little or no hotels at all .
About the sea now... Going to Monemvassia means that you will have your own car(s), cause else you wont be probably satisfied on that field ... Near to Monemvassia is the beach Pori, quite good but not the best choice . You can even swim underneath the castle, if you like deep sea, really nice view while swimming . You can go there when you are at the old town, ask for ''Portello" the old gate to the sea .
If you own or rent a car you can search for the beaches of the area . A one day trip is going to the island of Elafonissos, in south Lakonia, 100% Carribean colours, unfortunately crowded during August . You can also go to the vilage of Velanidia 16 kms south of Neapoli . The trip up to there is magnificent, as well as the village, and the sea is crystal blue but deep . The sea in the villages Archangellos, Elaia and Plytra (in the Lakonic gulf) is actually good, not deep, quite warm in mild Meditterenean landscapes, however my suggestion is Kyparissi to the north, on the Aegean coast, wonderful sea, lovely architecture(check my "Monemvassia off the beaten track'' notes ) . Its actually the place where Princess Diana spent her last days before going to Paris ...

Can't remember the name of the hotel we stayed in but it was on the island and town of Monemvasia and was wonderful. Wasn't a cheap option. Cheaper hotels to be found in the new town at the beginning of the causeway to Monemvassia (Elounda?). I think one place was called Hotel Dionysus (we ate there rather than stayed overnight). Getting around you can also take the 'cats' (fast ferries) up the coast all the way to Napflio and beyond (we came in from Hydra) - it makes frequent stops at some places that are only accessible by water.
But agree with previous advice - August is the (very) high season, so book soon.

So its not Elounda, but simply Nea Monemvasia that is the new town.

Thank you very much for your suggestions. I’m sure you do won’t mind if I try to take advantage of your knowledge of the area again.
Nobody obliges us to go to Monemvasia: we are on a Peloponneso tour for three weeks in August and I thought it was a nice place to stay. But perhaps you have better suggestions. Compatibly with the period, I’m looking for a few “sea days”, far from the crowd (!?) and modern comforts. Perhaps a couple of rooms to let in a middle of nothing (nothing = sea, nature ….) place.
Do you know any place which resembles to this dream?
Ciao e grazie

Surprisingly, I think Monemvasia fits your requirements! The point being that it is relatively isolated - quite a drive from the more obvious developed spots on the Peloponese and is a 4 hour fast-ferry (Dolphins, not cats as I mentioned in previous point - what, with that and Elounda, I had a bad moment with my tips!). As a result there are not that many hotels (3 on the island itslelf and a few in Nea) hence the reason why you may need to organise as soon as possible. Don't forget that August is the high holidays for most of Europe and Greece the most popular destination for Brits and Germans. Buts its a lovely place and a pretty unique spot.

Enjoy

Monemvasia's Indepedence Day

by Leeroy7

23rd of July is celebrated Monemvasia's indepedence day from the turks...
this day on the afternoon everyone gets inside a fishing boat and goes outside of the castle and light fireworks as the fake turkish boat(which is empty) follows...this is a representation
of the battle that took place there on 1821...in the end the turkish boat get on fire and great fireworks get out of it...when every boat returns to the marina there is concert in the public parking...

The mansions

by AndyRG

The houses of Monemvasia are restored, well-preserved. They give the impression of being built one on top of the other.
Stones from the rock environment have basicly been used for their construction, through the centuries...

The Walled City

by XKuger

"Stay Inside is a Must"

Staying inside the walled city of Monemvasia is a must. It gives one a gothic feeling of living in a by-gone-era. We were woken up to the sound of horse hooves on the stone pavement. As that is the only means of carying heavy stuff in and out of the town.

We explored the whole town for little over half a day, later in the day walked up to thw church in the upper town and to see the ruins of the upper town.

Definitly A must see in.
