Thousands of visitors -there was no more place to be!- had been gathered outside the church of Christ Helkomenos that night. They were waiting to take part at the procession of the "epitafios" ("sepulchral") at the streets of Monemvasia. At about 21.30 "epitafios" was transferred out of the church, the same happens in all churches of Greece that holy night.
There was even a german TV channel there...
All the houses look to the East, to the sea. You can be inside the building you see ("Kellia" pension) and enjoy the amazing view by yourself.
Who knows, maybe you can be inspired as Yannis Ritsos...
On first sight the rock is nothing more than a large deserted.... em....rock. That is the impression the original inhabitants desired to create as they built the settlement high on the south side of the rock back in the 6th century. They were evading the Slavonic tribes invading from the North.
