Sparta ("Sparti" in Greek) is located 225 km south of Athens, in Peloponnese, on the same site as ancient Sparta had stood.
It is the capital of the prefecture of Laconia (where Monemvasia, Mistras, the cave of Diros etc. are also situated), built in the heart of a fertile plain near the river Evrotas, among mountain Parnon and mountain Taygetos.

The modern city is one of the most beautiful in Peloponnese (a city that had beautiful Helen, whom Paris stole in Troy, couldn't be less charming), but you still can feel nowadays something from the glory of the ancient city-state, a military one which was the terror of Athens...
