Travel Tips for Lefkas

Friendly Greeks

by nickandchris

Greek filoxenia abounds in Vassiliki. This lovely gent would greet us every evening . He insisted on inviting us for a drink and we have very fond memories of him. He even came to see us off when it was time to leave. When we returned to Vassiliki 4 years later he remembered us, as we did him.

Lefkas - the best seas in the world

"Going there"

After I and my boyfriend decided to go to Lefkas for our summer holidays, we started consulting our maps on the best itinerary there. As we were travelling by bike, and we were carrying quite a lot of stuff with us (a girl needs her beauty things!) we tried to find the shortest and easiest way. From Thessaloniki [my hometown] to Lefkas is about 420 klm, so we said ok about 5 hours. BUT we chose of course the silliest way to go , from Larisa to Trikala and then I had the amazing idea instead of going from Ioannina to use a shortcut passing by the mountains in Trikala. And you know you must never take the shortcuts! Instead of the 5 hours, we arrived in Lefkada in 13 hours, 5 of which we were driving on a dirt road, wide enough for just one car.
On our way back, after we consulted with the locals, we went through Ioannina and Grevena and were home in about 5 hours. Nowadays, with the most part of the Egnatia street completed, it is about 3,5 hours

"The island"

After the absolute shock of travelling for 13 hours on a bike, and of course after a good night sleep, we started to explore the island and all its beauties. It is seriously one of the most beautiful island I have ever seen. And as for the sea.. really .. the best in the world!

"Where to stay"

Instead of going to Lefkas Town, we travelled 45 extra klms to go to Vassiliki village, to stay there. Everything is much cheaper there. Not only the accommodation, but also the food. It is a capital city for surfers and from there you can get the ferry to Zakynthos, Ithaca, and Keffalinia. You can also get one day trips to Ithaca, Kefallinia and the other small island near Lefkas, and even get the boat for beautiful beaches you can't reach by car
