Lefkas, woman in traditional wear
by JLBG
The traditional “regular” wear, worn everyday, is now exceptional. Only a few elderly women coming from mountain villages still wear it. It is a plain black dress with occasionally a black scarf. The traditional “feast” wear is more colored and worn now on the occasion of folk shows.

"Getting there."
Flew in with Thomas Cook on a chartered flight which left Gatwick spot on time and three hours later landed at Preveza on the Greece mainland. A tiny airport with a lagoon at one end of the runway and sea at the other. Fantastic watching the approach with the sharp banking. Made better by the fact that I had a window seat and had a great view of the island of Lefkas. Overall a good flight and we would travel with Thomas Cook again.Well, you could most probably describe Preveza airport as an out back airport. It seemed that about three planes had landed within a few minutes of each other and all had to pass through passport control at the same time. This consisted of a hall about 20 metres long with three booths at the end for which to pass through. As must be expected with Greece only one booth was open on this afternoon so we spent the next twenty minutes waiting in line in the backing sun. I suppose it started the sun tan off and to be truthful the time passed quickly as there was such at good atmosphere upon arrival.
Once through passport control we were ushered into the baggage hall. Once again un-organized chaos greeted us. Nothing to do but grin and bear it. We did get our luggage within about 45 minutes. I must say that the airport was well air conditioned but from what we had seen of it, it really was lacking in about everything. Now we had our luggage it was time to find our Thomas cook rep to find out where our villa was and get the hire car.
Andrea, our rep was a lovely German lady who just loved to talk. She greeted us warmly and gave us our welcoming pack and explained where the villa was. Umm, just follow the instructions as described in the pack she said. Okay, no problem we thought, in for a penny and all that. We got our hire car no problem and to the villas we go, I say villas as my sister and her husband with daughter are staying in the villa next to us. The instruction about getting there are vague but we get there in the end.
The villas were accessed via there own electric gates and are we happy. The brochure picture (artists impression) and description have not justified what these villas are like. We are gobsmacked. Its going to be a good week.
