Travel Tips for Lefkas

Lefkas, the city and channel.

This photo shows the city center, on the right.

The oblique line in the middle is the road coming from the bridge, between the brackish water lagoon on the left and the channel on the right.

Until the beginning of the 90s, there was a small ferry that took less than a dozen cars at a time. In order to fulfill the needs of the increasing traffic, a floating bridge has been installed. It is an old ferry that has been arranged as a bridge. Most of the time, visitors will not even pay attention that they cross a strip of sea. Only when several boats are waiting to access the canal, the bridge moves to allow their passage while it is the turn of cars to wait for a few minutes.

Sappho's Leap (Kavo tis Kyras-- Lady's cape)

by nickandchris

Found on Cape Lefkata. Spectacular white cliffs., 190ft. sheer.
The lady was Sappho who supposedly leapt to her death after being dumped by Phaon.
It has always been known as a jumping off place, lunatics and criminals were forced to jump as sacrifices to Poseidon..
Priests would make the jump with live birds tied to them to slow their fall.
Nowadays, nothing so sinister. Hang-gliders take off from here.

Santa Maura Fort

by travelthrough

"Santa Maura"

Fort Santa Maura (Agia Maura) is just outside Lefkada-town, between
the former island of Lefkas (which
is now a peninsula) and the Greek
continent (right opposite Agia Maura
there is another fort). The castle
is medieval, probably from the
13th century.
Behind the Fort there is also a long
beautiful beach, the Kastro Beach.
