"Kalo Pashcha!" - "Beautiful Easter (to you)!"
One of the customs of their forefathers that the local people of Skiathos keep very much alive is the feast of Easter which is celebrated in style. The church service starts at one in the morning of Holy Saturday followed around four in the morning by a procession which takes you through the cobbled streets and all the people join in. The houses are all lit up and candles burn in the courtyards. The people of Skiathos do not get much sleep during this time especially Holy Saturday as it is devoted to the last minute preparations for Easter Sunday, so if you decide to go the Island for your holiday be prepared for a couple of nights without sleep. Greek Orthodox Easter falls on April 23rd this year while ours is April 16th. Catholic and Protestant (Western) easter and Greek Othodox do coincide every few years, next year being one of them.
