Parga is quite small town, and there are quite a few things that you could do independently - walk up to the castle, get a water taxi to one of the beaches, go on the land train up to Ali Pashas castle, walk around the little streets, have lunch etc. You could also go further afield independently with trips from the harbour to the springs of Acheron. It probably depends on whether you want to chill out and enjoy Parga itself or want to see more of the area. The one thing I would say is that the town beach got very crowded when we were there when the cruise ship visited, so it may be worth getting a water taxi to one of the other beaches, depending on how long you've got in town.

If you want to book a trip I would recommend a visit to the Acheron river. You can walk up the river through a beautiful gorge. But if you are just wanting to stretch your legs after cruising then stay in Parga and walk up to the Castle. The views are brilliant up there and there is a smashing Cafe where you can relax outside with a coffee or beer and admire the view and also watch the birds in the surounding trees. The walk up to the castle through the little narrow streets takes you past some very good and interesting shops. Also if you have time - the tourist train that goes from the beach end of the harbour is very good value and takes you on a nice ride to Ali Pasha's castle a few miles from Parga.

If you are in Parga for one day only you should definitely stay there. It's a lovely town with lots of things to see.

Travel Tips for Parga

Hill of St Eleni Hike

by sandysmith

To the side of Piso Krioneri (small beach) you will see a hill with a tiny white chapel on the top.
There is a track that ascends up this hill - go pass the beach road and soon (past a co-op supermarket) on the right at the side of a taverna is the start of the way to this track. We discovered it mid morning and by then it was really too hot to climb all the way - its further than it looks, has exposed sections so no shade and takes about 3 hours, longer if you want to connect with the path to Lichnos and back through the olive grove to Parga for a round trip. We got part way up and were happy with the wonderful views that we had over the bay - well worthwhile just for this - see pic 3 and 4 please.

New restaurant in Town

by Lomma about Maestro

A new restaurant in Parga opened this year. Run by a Norwegian woman.

We tried it and was positively surprised. Nice meny, nice food, good service, nice view.

Try it! I had cooked chicken in lemon which was good, and I think everything there was good.
Big meny so you should see what you like yourself.

Our mooring in Valthou bay

Valthou bay is much quieter than Parga’s main bay as it has not the boat traffic of the city. As our party of three small boats arrived in the evening from Corfou and left to Igoumenitsa, back home in the morning, we did not bother about bathers on the beach

Parga - Pretty as a Picture

by sandysmith

Parga on the Greek mainland is beautifully situated at the foot of a 16th century Venetian castle in a bay on the west coast of Greece between Igoumenítsa and Préveza (where the airport is located. Makes for an idyllic holiday location and although not an island has a relaxed island feel.
