by AcornMan Rethymno is a big, noisy city, and the only real tourist attractions there are all within the old city. Hotel Brascos is close to the old city (just about a block south of it), and well within walking distance, but it's situated on a loud and busy intersection. The only reason I stayed there rather than somewhere in the old city is that I got a really good deal on the room through a travel agency (just 33 Euros per night for two people, including breakfast). I believe the normal rate is quite a bit higher than that. If I ever go back to Rethymno I'll definitely stay somewhere inside the old town because that's where everything is and it's also a lot quieter, but Hotel Brascos was just fine for our short stay. As long as you don't mind the traffic and the short walk to the old town it's a good place to stay.
The room itself was nothing special, but it was fine, and we really didn't expect much for such a low price. Our air conditioner did not work the first night, but they did fix it before our second night. Otherwise our stay was just fine. The hotel is nicer than I thought it would be, and the breakfast buffet (included in the room price) was outstanding. The breakfast alone made it worth staying there.

Makri Steno by AcornMan When I was researching places to stay in Rethymno before my trip one of my top choices was Makri Steno because it was inexpensive (35 Euros per night for two people with en suite shower and toilet) and it's located inside the old city. When I was walking around I happened to find it, and based on its location and what I could see through the front door it looked like a great place. In fact, I wish I had stayed there rather than Hotel Brascos because it's on a nice quiet side street and it's very close to all the major sights in the old town. If I ever go back to Rethymno I'll definitely stay here. Sea Front as seen from the beach by AcornMan Another place in Rethymno I seriously considered staying was Sea Front, located just across from the town beach near the inner harbor. The location is quite convenient because there's so much to do and see in that area but I'm glad I did not stay there because it's a loud part of the old town due to all the shops, restaurants, tavernas, cafes, and pedestrian traffic. Some of the nearby bars had fairly loud music too, so it would have been difficult for me to get much rest staying in a place like that. The price quoted to me while I was researching my trip was 35 Euros per night for two people with en suite shower and toilet.

Olga's - Rethymno by Spincat We stayed in May 2004. Couldn't be better situated: our room looked over the Nerandzes Mosque and a lively street. It is an ever-so-slightly-scruffy, very charming, and rather bohemian place. If 'Breakfast at Tiffany's' was going to happen in Rethymno it would happen at Olga's. (And there's even 'cat'.) Our room was tiny but consequently very reasonably priced. There are other larger, more expensive, rooms and studios. We loved this place - you'll like it too if you like to be in the centre of things but aren't desperately fussy about the odd speck of dust. It IS clean at Olga's, but it IS an old building. You might stay a view days or you might end up never leaving, which is what I reckon had happened to many of the guests!
Apart from being right in the middle of the old town, one of the great things about this place is its roof garden with fabulously exotic plants - a good place to sit with a beer. The picture (apologies to the Room's website for using one of their pics - my camera was broken when we visited 2005) shows the stairs up to the garden. There was a TV in our room - unusual for cheaper rooms. Not sure if this is an advantage or not - if you want to watch CNN and 'scorchio' style greek satellite TV , then you'll be happy! Friendly, helpful management - not to mention a fabulous collages of travel pictures on every wall - make this a very special place. There's a restaurant/cafe downstairs - Stella's Kitchen - which is recommendaed for breakfast and lunch. pepi studios by Spincat This is the view from the top of our staircase; out front, our balcony gave out onto a pretty street in the old town. The rooms are really well maintained: ours were cleaned every day. Roomy and tastefully decorated in a simple style. The whole place is quite small and intimate; a pretty garden round the tiny pool. Remember the pool IS tiny - I emphasise that as there were grumbles about that from visitors who hadn't read their brochure properly! You can use the larger one at the Ideon, about 10 mins away ... plus full use of a massive beach that runs around the bay - again about a 5 to 10 mins away. There are studios &apartments available. The studios : we were very happy with our small studio but, while we found it ideal and spacious for 2, it would not have been so good for 3 or 4 perhaps. The apartments: there were grumbles from some guests who stayed in the apartments, as opposed to studios (and therefore paid more). Bedrooms in these larger apartments were on a mezzanine with a slippery steep staircase. The overall floor area wasn't much larger than the studios. I would have been fine with them, but soem guests obviously had higher expectations. If you want a very roomy aparmtent, maybe look elsewhere? Also good to ask for studio on a higher floor - they have a nicer outlook. Don't expect to do elaborate cooking here - two small rings and a fridge plus some basic equipment. Loads of places to eat in town! Take a little washing line and a few pegs. Bear in mind that the staff are great but the ones we met didn't speak much English. Not a problem us as we'd picked up some basic Greek on past trips, but, ,we did hear grumbles from other guests! The rep just seems to visit once a week - a big plus for us, but , again, if you like a lot of input from reps, you may not find this place best for you.
Again, a location location thing - right in the heart of Rethymnon's old town, in one of the quaint old streets. Cheap, clean, friendly and cheerful - also fuss free ! - for the independently minded traveller. Unfortuantely, these rooms are only bookable for minimum one week's stay through First Choice holidays in the UK: in other words you can't just turn up there - there may be other travel companies that do them, so do ask around. VT member steventilly has already given these rooms a plug in his brilliant Crete site. So do remember to check his tips out too.

This hotel is really great value for the money. I paid 35 euro for a single room (that has douoble bed). The room is in excellent condition (4-star level) with private marble bathroom and carved wood furniture, as well as high ceiling. There is a nice breeze in this area of Old Town and there is no need for air conditioning. The family that owns the hotel is very attentive. Served me free shots of raki, water melon, tea during my stay. This is a far cry from some of the more mercenary outfits I have encountered.
Excellent service. Very high quality rooms. Very low price. Theme: HotelPrice: US$40-80 » Currency ConverterComparison: less expensive than averageAddress: Vosporou 26, Old QuarterDirections: Old Town

We walked in to this hotel looking for a room and it looked like a nice family oriented hotel with lots of kids running around. The plus of it is that you are still in the old town and you have a pool for your kids. We were considering taking a room year after our visit as we took our 8 yo niece with us but we decided to rent something more sophisticated yet reasonably priced :-)
I am posting this hotel because we have seen it on many ocassion and people who stayed there......looked happy

I was stunned by the beautyful photos and what looked to be a very stylish hotel/apartment hotel with a relaxing calm athmosphere. The photos and description did not give an accurate impression of the place in my mind. The reception and pool area looked great. No complaints there! It is set right by the National road - just a smaller road between the place and the NR. The noiselevel was high. The rooms were dirty. The furniture and kitchenfront especially. It gave a scruffy impression. Not at all like on the photoes or in the description. I got to experience several rooms. Some smelled really bad. Of smoke, perfume, and even sewage. Granted we were very dissapionted by the location and the noiselevel, but the rooms really did not meet our expectations in any way. I would not recomend this place to anyone that wants some peace and quiet and nice and clean accomodation. We have travelled Greece a lot - this was our worst accomodation experience yet. We have been to simple cheap places, but they have been cleaner and nicer smelling than these rooms. A pity. There was so much potential there. New cleaners maybe? And a small sentence about the very high level of trafic noise.

Just arived home from two weeks in La Stella hotel in rethymno. The place is brand new and very well designed and decorated to provide their guests the best atmosphaire for holidays. The pool area is fantastic with a white tale pool looking like a blue lagoonon day light !The pool bar next to the pool plays lounge music and that completes the best combination for a great relax day! The beach was a few minutes walk away and lidl is just 50 meters away, such us the restaurants and bars.We have booked a studio and it was very comfurtable and clean. Many thanks to katerina ,suzana and Gunter for their services.I will defently visit this place again.
