More about Leoniki Residence

Greece - The Greek Islands

THE GREEK ISLANDS (1998)

Crete

Like most uni students these days, I decided to take a year off uni to travel and work overseas - my chosen destination was the Greek Islands. During the day I worked as an animation co-ordinator for a 5 star resort (Leoniki Residence) in Platanes, Rethymnon on Crete, basically keeping the guests happy entertained with games and activities. Three nights a week I worked down the road from the hotel at a funky cocktail bar called Antonio's. Don't expect beaches with white soft sand - the reality is that the majority of the beaches (not all!) are pebble lined, but the main beaches are fully equipped with lounge chairs, umbrellas and tables for which you pay a varying fee. However, the water is crystal clear and envigoratingly refreshing. The old town of Rethymnon is always alive with the bustling tourists and holiday atmosphere. Wander through the little back streets to find that perfect gift or quaint restaurant.

ADDRESS DETAILS: Leoniki Residence (photo above) is located right on the beach road called Machis Kritis, number 197, in the suburb of Platanes, Rethymnon. Antonio's cocktail bar is 200m down the same road heading away from the main town of Rethymnon.

Crete - Day Trips

Two exceptional places I visited were the pictoresque coastal town of Agia Galini and the idylic oasis called Kourtaliotiko. The photos above tell the story! I admit I love places where you can swim and relax and the latter accomodates that need entirely. For the more adventurous, Samaria Gorge cannot be missed. The day long hike through this overbearing natural wonder is magical. This day trip can easily be booked through your hotel or the numerous travel agencies in Rethymnon town.

Watersports

There are heaps of activities to keep everyone entertained on Crete. Antonio runs two watersports places along the popular beaches in Plantanes, where you can ride the 'banana', waterski, parasail or go on trips to the caves. If you don't want to get wet, take one of the Popeye boats out with your mates for a night of drinking and dancing. You can book these trips at Rethymnon harbour.

Santorini

Everything you see and hear about Santorini is true - YES! It's as beautiful as on the postcards (most taken at Ia), you see donkeys, it's more expensive than the other islands, there are swimming pools on the cliff faces, and you may have to sleep on the hostel roof during peak season (we did). The most beaurtiful part of Santorini to stay at is a place in the north called Ia (or Oia). This is where the majority of the idyllic postcards you see are taken. There is a great hostel to stay in where the staff are so friendly and a great breakfast is included. Don't just stay here though, take the bus around the whole island - a reminder that the buses along the coast to Ia from the port are usually overcrowded with hot sweaty locals and tourists and there are no road rules as it swerves, dangerously, milimetres from the cliff edges!

Folegandros

An absolute must!! Not many people visit Folegandros - the only reason I did was because I met up with some Aussies who had heard it was not as touristy but very idylic - so true! We stayed in a cabin at Livaldi camping ground near the port and discovered a place near the beach that I will always think of when I describe the Greek Islands - deep blue crystal clear waters, absolute tranquility and no other tourists (see photo). Our German friend, Theo, discovered the cove one morning by accident when he walked up and over the cliff near the camping ground. We stayed on this small island for 4 days - we just couldn't leave! The perfect 'chill out' destination after overdoing it on the party islands.

Paros

This is a popular stop over either before or after Ios. Normally you stay clear of the spreukers down at the harbour who try and con you into staying at their accomodation. However, me and my friend didn't know where the hostels were and happened to be approached by a really nice lady who showed us pictures of her excellently priced twin share unit 15 mins out of town. It was cheaper than hostels I had stayed in, clean, and in an excellent location! When I find her business card I'll post her name and phone number. It is worth taking the short boat over to Monasteri beach from Naoussa harbour to go swimming. Naoussa is also the main part of town to go out, eat and shop. The evenings are great to go shopping and wandering around the back streets - its so atmospheric and there are an abundance of jewellry stores.

Delos

Most people go to the Greek Islands for the sun and the partying. Delos is different. No-one's allowed to live on Delos - it's a famous archaeological site which dates back thousands of years and is only accessible by structured boat tours which leave from Mykonos. For those of you who have been to the Vatican City and spent ages gazing up at the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in awe will know exactly how I felt walking around this ancient city, sitting on the ancient benches, trying to imagine how it would have been to live here all those years ago. Unlike in the Louvre where you can only look at the ancient ruins, at Delos you can actually walk amongst, touch and sit on these relics! After studying this place at uni in archaeology class it was so surreal to actually be there. An absolute must.

Mykonos

Mykonos is alot larger than the other islands - it has a Hard Rock Cafe, Body Shop etc. Hence the choice of places to go out are more abundant so be prepared to spend more money here. Do NOT stay at Mykonos Camping - at the time I went all the hostels were booked out so me and my fellow travellers had to stay at this beachside camping place. We had to sleep on concrete, they had no ground mats, or sleeping bags left - so we 'borrowed' the beach lounges for the night. If you do this make sure you're out of there before they come looking for them at around 8.30am. By the way, we found the famous Mykonos pelican!

Ios

The most famous party island. There are an abundance of two things in Ios - nightclubs and Aussies. That about sums up the place. It's a fantastic island to go for a few days of non-stop drinking and clubbing. A great place to stay is Ios Camping (see photo) - it has aa great pool and you hire a tent to keep your stuff in while you spend all night out up in the town (a short bus ride or pleasant walk up if you feel like a hike).
