If you wan to see something outside of the normal tourist areas, then take a walk to the mountain area Gavaliana. It's quite near the old town and the beach, so it can be a good tree hour journey when you get tired of all sun, bath and ice cream. There are not so many roads up there, just check the map, it's easy to find the road. When leaving the tourist streets you will quite soon see some more genuine houses, children playing on the streets and some old people just sitting and waiting for something to happen. A hot day the trip up on the top can get you to want to go back to the ice cream anyway, but don't give up. When you get on the top you will find a very nice little church, and a splendid view over the town of Rethymnon.
