Samos - Patmos ferry in May

by vtveen

We intend to stay in Samos and Patmos, starting mid May 2007.
We have to fly into Samos and to take a ferry (or hydrofoil) to Patmos.

Who can help with information about the schedules in May and where to find more information (website ??).

When I looked a couple of weeks ago, I couldn't find the ferry schedules for Santorini in May - so I don't think they are published yet. Have a look at Euromeet2007's travelogue http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/tt/817e7/#TL where there are a couple of links.

I went on that route in June 2006 so hopefully the schedule will be repeated in May 2007.
These from Pythagorio(nr Samos airport) to Patmos:-
'Nissos Kalymnos' ferry 4 times per week on Mon, Wed, Fri, Sun at 14:15.
'Aegean hydrofoils' 2 times a day early morning and late afternoon (this company was not on any website at the time).

The 'Nissos Kalymnos' is more regular, the hydrofoils appear/disappear frequently under various company names so, you will need to ask in the ferry agent about halfway down the main street in Pythagorio.

Travel Tips for Samos

A Thumbs Down Meal :-(

by mazzap about Ambrosia Restaurant

I wouldn't normally bother to write a tip on a restaurant that was simply mediocre, but this really was so bad it needs mentioning - perhaps I should have put it as a Warning or Danger (though 'dangerous' would be unfair!!)

The food was so bad we left most of it - much of it was fatty, gristly meat & cold too.

I ordered a pizza which was a bad decision. The one I got was a mass produced type which was hard & had so much greasy pepperoni it shone!!

My husband ordered the Stamna which is a traditional Greek pot roast dish of lamb with lemon & feta cheese - well apart from having a lot of unidentifiable 'things' in it, it was so greasy & swimming in fat globules with a few bits of meat that were so tough he couldn't eat more than a few forkfulls! Most unlike him not to clear his plate!

My son had the cheese saganaki - (deep fried halloumi cheese). It was very blandly presented & over-fried (see pic) and again....greasy!!!!

Naturally we were very disappointed - a waste of an evening! Sorry, NONE!!

Tsourlei, one of the secrets of Samos

by vtveen

Tsourlei is one of these inland hamlets of Samos; not easy accessible in the middle of nowhere. But the scenery around is breathtaking with lots of forests and lush flowering broom-bushes everywhere. The road, especially close to Potami was bad and we had to drive very carefully, further on it was a narrow concrete road winding through the forests. In Tsourlei we were waiting for another car, which drove through the narrow gap between two houses, before we dared to do it too.

Tsourlei itself is a very tiny settlement with just a couple of (farm)houses, the Agios Panteleimon church, the old spring and wash house and a local tavern/café with a huge plane tree. But we enjoyed the tranquility and serenity of the place.
