The southside
by Yank_o
The southernmost parts of the island are, together with those to the west, among the most unspoilt.
Nice views from villages perched on the hillside, good and hardly accessible beaches, some interesting country roads bordering on the adventurous.
The Apostle Paul is said to have briefly disembarked at a minuscule "port" at the bottoms of those hills but you could hardly tell.
Try the dirt road between Spatharei and Skoureika villages. Both villages have paved accesses to Samos' main southern road (Airport to Karlovasi), but the unpaved bit between them offers magnificent views.
Karlovassi
by mardaska
Karlovassi is the second largest town and port in Samos. It is a lively little town because of the students that live there since Karlovassi is the place of the Mathematical Department of the Aegean University.
The down is divided into five sections: old, new and middle Karlovassi, the bay and the harbour.
Karlovassi used to be the commercial and industrial capital of the island. Remains of tanneries and deserted factories are all around.
But still, there are signs of its past glories; impressive churches and mansions make you realize that this place was not a simple town.
