Aghios Nikolaos Church
by mazzap
This unusual church caught my eye, not just because of it's interesting modern pure white architecture, but mainly because it is situated in such an unusual place. It can be found near Karlovasi on the northern coast at what can no more be described as a car park at the top of a track that leads down to a beautiful beach!
A look inside it's tiny interior was well worthwhile - simply amazing (see pic)!
Platanos
by mardaska
Platanos Village is built between Mount Kerkis and Mount Ambelos, around 500 meters above sea level. Great view again and a beautiful square to rest under the trees. Wine and grapes are produced here.

"Wildflowers"
Abundance of wildflowers - anthemis, poppies, aliums etc
"Characters"
Friendly local characters - particularly round the fishing boats
"Mountains"
Stunning scenery up in the mountains.
If visiting villages park at entrance - streets are very narrow. We found this to our cost in Marathokambos - drove in but street narrowed to just a car's width with right-angle turns! Eventually car wouldn't fit through so had to reverse and do 5-point turn in little square - to the amusement of locals.
"Wild life"
It's surprising what you come across - could be a shepherd with his flock, a chameleon, and cats galore
"Historic sites"
Ancient sites around south of island:
Castle at Pythagorio, Temple of Heraion at Ireon, tunnel aqueduct from 564BC near Pythagorio
"Picturesque harbours"
Many picturesque fishing villages are dotted around the coast
