Hi all, I was told by a Greek friend of mine to take a rest from my train ride from Athens to Istanbul by spending one night in Thessaloniki.
Can anyone recommend a cheap but good hotel in a good and safe location which is easy to go to from the train station because we will be carrying a heavy big luggages.
Budget is around 50Euros per night for a double room.

Hi, I agree on Stephanos, try the Rex. They have rooms eith shared bathrooms and toilets. I stayed here last winter some nights.It's almost opposite of the trainstation, a little to your left as you stand with your back to the trainstation.Maybe you can leave some of the luggage on the trainstation ??
The hotellocation is safe, on a big, noisy street from the big busstation to the city-centre ( and further to the airport).
Spend more days in Thessaloníki, She is worth it !!!

Would you mind staying at a friend's house? Fellow VTer. It is common practice in VT. In this case, there is a charge as this is a new friend.
This is the view from the window of my apartment. The apartment was small, but the priceless view from the balcony- yes, that's Mt Olympus with the snow-capped peaks- made it feel huge. We spent countless hours sitting out on the balcony looking down upon the forrest of tv antennae, cinderblock apartments, lively rooftops, to the harbor below.
Christmas is a great time to visit Thessaloniki. Although there aren't so magical as in Germany or Austria, you will often see the town full of snow. The town is very beautifully decorated. There is of course a large Christmas Tree, but also a very beautiful ship [Christmas Trees are supposed to be a foreign tradition that came from the West, the Greeks used to decorate ships during the season]. There is also a nativity scene, where all the Thessalonians have been photographed as children. And of course if you are there during Christmas holidays, don't forget to buy a Vasilipota-tsoureki from Terkenlis. There are several shops in Thessaloniki, and one in the airport. Just let your nose guide you!
Thessaloniki has a lot of beautiful old houses with traditional balkan architecture. These are spread round the city. In the picture you can see Ahmet Kapantzis (top-left), Villa Bianca (top-right), House Mordoch (bottom-left) and Mehmet Kapantzis (bottom-right).
You can get there by plane, car, train and ship.
On buses. There are buses that go anywhere in town. The full ticket costs 0.44 Euros. Student tickets cost 0.23 Euros. You can take a taxi / camp if you're hurry.
There are so many restaurants in the city centre! Food is quite cheap, but check out the menu posted by the door before you go in. Souvlaki places are the best for fast-cheap fixups. Ladadika area, Navarino area and the taverns in a zone of 2-3 block parallel to the sea-walk from the port all the way to White Tower are great places to sample Greek cuisine. Ouzo with seafood appetizers 'mezedes' is a must!
