Short History Lessons of Thessaloniki
by dimilag
Thessaloniki was founded by King Cassander of Macedonia at 315 BC. She was given the name of the sister of King Cassander. As time passes by, the city becames stronger and transformes at the commercial and cultural center of Macedonia. At 395 AD Thessaloniki is proclaimed "coregent" with Constantinople. The city style changes and new buildings are constructed as the Rotonda, etc. Nowdays Thessaloniki keeps its Byzantine character by maintaining the best and most well preserved Byzantine monuments in the world. In 1430 Thessaloniki is occupied by the Turks. In 1912 Thessaloniki is liberated by the Greek Army on the feast day of its patron saint, Aghios Dimitrios. In 1917 the greatest part of the center of Thessaloniki is destroyed by the Great Fire. In 1922 the refugees arrive after the Minor Asia disaster and give economic boost to the whole area. In 1997 Thessaloniki is declared as The Cultural Capital of Europe.
Take a long walk at the Old Town
by hamouras
Take a long walk at the Old Town It's one the pretiest areas of Thessaloniki. With old houses, small alleys and a beautiful view its worth it. Especially when you realise that you are totally lost but you still keep going. A map would be helpful at the point that you decide you would rather head back.
There are a lot of small squares where children play, people are just relaxing having a coffe. At some parts of the Old Town there are tavernas with delicious food and traditional cafes, called 'kafenia'.
At the top of the Old Town there is the old walls of Thessaloniki called the Seven Canstles. The view from there is magnificent. Just next to the wall going towards the city center there are the Gardens of Pasa, a small park where you can have a picnic.
KALAMARIA- ÊÁËÁÌÁÑÉÁ
by Yiannis2000
There are plenty of pleasant suburbs at the periphery of metropolitan Thessaloniki.
KALAMARIA is one of those suburbs east of the city. If one visits Thessaloniki as tourist, Kalamaria is great alternative to staying in the busy city center!
For more details check my KALAMARIA page here in VT.

The first...

To Sousami (Sesame)
The first thing you will notice at this place is Sheila's warm and welcoming smile. The chef is her husband and together they have created this lovely place.
Talking about a restaurant the first thing to talk about is food. They offer quite some nice variety of dishes that can satisfy even the most demanding appetite, such as mine :) They also offer great vegetarian dishes that can convince even the hardcore carnivore to give them a try.
The decoration is also quite unusual for a restaurant of its class. Everyday items, small ornaments and toys make the place feel very cosy and warm like a hospitable Greek home. The atmosphere is quite informal, but has nothing to envy from a formal restaurant. You can take your friends there as well as your business partners with the same ease.
Well said before and will be said again: Sheila's unique personality. So welcoming and friendly you'll definitely go back again. And as a matter of fact you will go back to try these other dishes from the menu. Well for starters I would suggest Mushrooms with dark garlic sauce, Celery and Roquefort casserole and lettuce salad with soya sauce. For a main dish you can try Roast summer vegetables with fresh yoghurt or the Cheese stuffed beef burger. And off course Hot chocolate cake with vanilla ice-cream is a must when it comes to desert. And my favorite wine is the fruity rose Erodios by Babatzimopoulos.
