Places to see around Katerini

by pi2a

Hi all!
I am going on a vacation in Olympic Beach and I'd like to see some sites around, can you recommend something?
I've already been in Dion, so other options are welcome.
Please, tell me also how can I get there by public transportation?
Many thanks & looking forward to hearing from you :)

Re: Places to see around Katerini

It is absolutely worth to travel to the mountain village of Litohoro, on the slopes of the legentary mount Olympos, it is a beautiful place with early Macedonian architecture, stunning views of the mountain and the sealine of Pieria district (where Katerini is the capital town). Many hostels and restaurants with ok prices are open all year round. It is easily accessible from the Katerini intercity bus station.
The southernmost edge og Pieria/ Katerini district is dominated by the medieval castle of Platamonas(close to the Platamonas seaside village), where cultural performances are often arranged; close to the castle there is a road leading to the newly restored village of Agios Panteleimon, but u 'd a car to get ther.
North of Katerini u can visit Vergina, the site an early Macedonian settlement with some interesting tombs of Macedonian "kings". It is a very distinct place with monuments that preserve vivid colour decorations, a rarity in Greece.

Travel Tips for Thessaloniki

Thermaikos Gulf

by AndyRG

Thessaloniki is built next to Thermaikos Gulf. This avenue is a central one of the city. At the background, you can see the port. The central Aristotelous square is somewhere on the right of the picture (it can't be seen).
You can visit many interesting places, as the Arc of Roman emperor Galerius (303), Rotonda-Kamara, Eptapirgio, the Concert Hall, the Archaeological Museum -see my travelogue about it- the Byzantine Museum, the Museum of Modern Art, also the only museums in Greece about design and cinema etc.

Aghia Yorgi Beaches

by traveloturc

I think the nearest place to swim in Thessaloniki is Aghia Yorgi and the beach is really very good although I didnt like very much the quality of the sea but the facilities are enough and its also an oasis for greek families. There is also plenty place for parking

A good one in Kalamaria

by DrexelDragon about The Red Rose

The Red Rose is a great little bar over in Kalamaria. I think I felt as if it was the closest thing to a US type bar based on the way the inside was situated. It had more standing areas, and more people sitting at the bar. Couches were outnumbered by tables and people choosing to stand up at the counters built around the supporting columns. It's a small place, and the music was played a little too loud. Yet, I liked the bar setup and the exposed wooden ceiling beams. Definitely a place to go back to, and it's the type of place you start your night off at and then head out. No real concerns here...everyone I saw was mainly casual.

Plane / train / bus

by GeorgiosX

From abroad you should come by plane. Look at http://www.olympic-airways.gr/, http://users.otenet.gr/~cpnchris/skga.html, http://users.otenet.gr/~cpnchris/skgd.html.
If you come from Greece, you can take the train or the bus. Try http://www.ose.gr/ and http://www.ktel.org/.
Take the buses of the OASTH (http://www.oasth.gr/) to get around.
