Thessaloniki Tip
This was some time ago, but my memories of this city are favourable. I remember being welcome and enjoying walking through the various areas. I especially remember the open air Tavernas and a cold beer on a hot afternoon.

How, and when to time, and date a 4-8 week Greece trip (next Spring)?
I am planning a 4-8 week Greece trip, taking in the entire country (from North to South, starting in Thessaloniki ending in Heraklion, where I will fly out). My question is when to arrive in Thessaloniki so to see the dawn of Spring as I work my way down to the islands. I heard Athens is empty during Easter, so maybe that's the best time to be there, but at the same time I hear Easter is best on the islands (where the the smell of lamb is everywhere). I don't know.
The problem is before Greece, I am in Cyrpus, Lebanon, and Syria.
I enter Syria in early January, and after completing Lebanon, I fly to Cyprus. I need to know how long to delay my arrival in northern Greece, so the 4-8 weeks I'm planning for Greece fall on the best weather, and greatest travel experience in Greece.
If it helps, I heard Cyprus spring begins in late February, so maybe early, or middle March is best to arrive in Thessaloniki? My flight is from Paphos, Cyprus to Thessaloniki. At the same time, I heard Feb/March is generally a wet period in both Cyprus, and Greece. In that case, I'm screwed.
How would you time and date this trip?
Thanks
When travelling Greece in Spring, I would go from South to North. Maybe you don't know it, but Greece has a lot of snow in winter in Northern Greece, even places to ski !!! So...Begin at Rhodes or Crete, travel up via the Cyclades ( dont plan too strict, the ferry's don't run by storm)visit Athens, Delphi, Metéora, Olympos ( Dion and Vergina), Thessaloniki ( and Pella and Edesa).
Have a good sty !! maria

Strikes are popular in all of the greece, strikes of bus drivers (good for you if you are a student there, the schools are closed), of rug-collectors and of unic=versity secretaries, of post offices, of firemen and who else knows what other types of strikes. It is better to know before whatr strikes are going to be held there just to avoid some problems
Fena is a store I really liked. I was not so sure about it when my friend was directing me to the place. It's in a odd place, because there are apartment buildings all around, and then there's the Fena building. It's not at all in a shopping area. It's not even in the downtown area. It's over in Kalamaria, but still not around other shopping areas/stores. It's a nice trendy department store. Yet, it's not the kind of department store you would think of in the US. It's smaller, more personal, and I thought it was cool. It's definitely expensive. Name brands are there. Diesel, Burberry, Tommy, Lacoste, Guess, Polo Ralph Lauren, among others... We only visited the men's casual with also a brief stroll through the suits/formal wear floor. The sales ladies are very helpful. Although it's targeting a refined group of people, I did not find it to be overly snobbish -- even the people aside from myself shopping there. It was cool. I do suggest shopping here if you're looking to pickup some new threads while you're in town and are disappointed with the downtown shops. They have shoes, and sadly very few casual, dress sandals. Clothes of course, but I did not see a lot of outerwear. I ended up buying a pair of linen Guess pants, a Lacoste shirt, and a Polo Ralph Lauren collared-button-down long sleeve shirt. I would have bought a Tommy Hilfiger casual sport coat if they had my size, but alas no... BE PREPARED FOR STICKER SHOCK IF YOU HAVEN'T GONE SHOPPING IN GREECE BEFORE. This was the first time since I've been here that I really looked at clothes. If I see something, and I like it; then I buy it. I usually don't pay attention to price tags considering the fact that I know I'm not shopping Rodeo Drive or 5th Ave. I didn't this time either, but I didn't think it was going to be as much as it was. My 3 items were 270euro, which that day cost me about $340US, which is a bit ridiculous thanks to the dollar. Ididn't even get sandals to go with my linen pants!!! Anyway, ask about what items are onsale, because there are sale items. Yet, there are no sale signs at all. It's all just in together with the regularly priced items.
Like every Greek city, in Thessaloniki there are really many taxis. People use them a lot, as they're cheap. Most of them are quite new and air conditioned, which is really important during the summer months. Many drivers drive like crazy, driving fast when on a highway or getting on bus lanes when they're in city center. Many of them use their cell phones while driving or listen loudly to radio.
Man can get a taxi from a special taxi stop on central streets or just by waiving to the driver everywhere. When you're inside a taxi, the driver may stop and get a second (or even third passenger) who's going to a place near yours, which can be really annoying, as many times you'll need more time than getting a public bus.
Most routes in city center cost less than 4 euros and a route from the airport to the city center can cost about 15 euros.
Personally, I don't like using taxis for the reasons mentioned above. But it can really be helpful when going out at night. or when you have to go to the airport or rail or bus stations. For more convinience, man can call for a taxi (it costs only 2 euros more) or arrange an appointment for next hours or next days, which can be helpful if someone goes to the airport or to rail or bus stations.

99% of the taverns and restaurants in Thessaloniki offer top quality food. I prefer the nonstandard greek cuisine of 'plateia Athonos' and 'Beer acdemy' beer house (pic). The best chinese restaurant among all chinese restos i had lunch all over europe and canada is in thessaloniki ('Peking' at sofouli street) - update - not any more they changed their cook...pity!!!!!
