Although Vergina is not in or near Thessaloniki, you must not miss it if you have time to spare. Vergina is the site of excavated palace remains and tumulus tombs of the Macedonian kings and dignitaries. In fact, one of the tomb is believed to be that of Philip II, father of Alexander the great.First, while still in Thessaloniki, you can start with a visit to the Archaeological Museum (6 M. Andronikou street) where you can see a superb collection of antiquities including gold from the Macedonian empire.
Then you can head to Vergina archaeological site (with museum on the premises), which is near the village of Imathia, 75 km away from Thessaloniki.
Believe me, the trip is more than worthy.
