Cheapest train from Thessaloniki-Athens?

Cheapest train from Thessaloniki-Athens?
What is the least expensive, direct train connection from Thessaloniki-Athens? How long does it take? If it is more than 6 hours? Does it need to be booked in advance, or is one or two days enough notice. Also, does it make a difference if booked online, or at the agency? I am looking to for the train that goes to larissas station in Athens- easily connected to Athens metro system, then I have to go to airport by metro. If you know the arrival time of this particular train, please let me know. Thanks

there is a train from larissa station to the airport so that should be easy enough for you.
i took the train the other direction last year and if i remember right then it was around 5 hours.
me and my friend booked the ticket one day in advance directly at the train station.
i looked at the website of the greek railways before i bought the ticket and found no discounts for booking in advance and the train was not very packed so we could just have showed up on the spot and bought a ticket.
this was in mid june by the way.
the train was pretty nice with a dining car where parked ourself the whole journey so that we had a table for our books and papers.

Travel Tips for Thessaloniki
To & From Thessaloniki Makedonia Airport
by Pakistaniguy
There is no Olympic Airways shuttle service to main city which is 16 Kms, but Bus # 78 can help u in this regard. It leaves from the front of the train station and stops in front of the ferry terminal costing 0.50 Euros (Approx.). A one way taxi costs 7.50 Euros.
Visit Edessa.
by hamouras
Visit Edessa. Edessa is a town about 60Km from Thessaloniki. A trip to this town is worth it because of its natural beauty and especially of the water falls that exist in the center of the town. They are not Niagara Falls but still the water falls because of the earth's gravity.
Armenistis Camping at Halkidiki!
by Yiannis2000
Do not miss the chance to visit the nice beaches of Halkidiki! I certainly recommend the mid peninsula of Sithonia, where fewer of the 2 million Greeks spent their summer holidays...
The most distant, and still most popular village in Sithonia is named Sarti, 3 hours drive from Thessaloniki.
If u favour camping sites there is an excellent place called ARMENISTIS, with all camping facilities.
InterCity / InterCity Express to Athens
by skg-traveller
There are two daily services to and from Athens with InterCity Express trains. They're the best trains in Greece as they're fast and clean. The trip to Athens takes about 4 hours and 15 minutes and the train stops only in Larissa and Lianokladi stations. All ICE trains are air conditioned and have restaurants.
It costs about 48 euros for second class and 56 euros for first class.
There are also four InterCity trains to and from Athens. They're also fast (the trip takes about 4 hours and 45 minutes) but their quality isn't as good as with InterCity Express trains. They're also air conditioned and have restaurants.
The tickets cost about 35 euros for second class and 42 euros for first class.
Toast
by nikki-the about Romios
There are three types of traditional fast food in Greece (not including the American hamburgers-and-fries or submarine-sandwiches varieties): the "breakfast" type which (typically) closes at midday (this is changing nowadays) and serves pitas and boughatses, the "grill" type which has gyros and souvlakia (kebab) and the sandwich type which serves "toast".
Romios is of the latter type: serving toast. Surprisingly enough, it is run by a Cypriot. This is surprising because (a) my experience of Cypriot "cuisine" has been consistently bad over the past 3 years and (b) they do not make or eat "toast" in Cyprus. This small shop has the best ingredients (you choose) in terms of quality, freshness and variety. It is unpretentious and cheap as well.
Note the photographs and newspaper clippings on the walls and you'll get a pretty clear idea of the Greek-Cypriot owner's political opinions of the 1974 invasion of the island by the Turks. For those who don't know what "toast" is, it is a fresh baguette sandwich with whatever ingredients you choose and freshly grilled with butter or margarine.
