Geographical and Historical Background
by Kuznetsov_Sergey
Arachova sits on a mountain which is located in the south and the Parnassus Mountains in the north. The urban houses lie from west to east on a hill with a slope of 45 to 50°.
Arachova is a tourist attraction because of the proximity to popular Delphi but was developed in the late 20th century with a ski resort.
Although the date Arachova was established is unknown, it must have been around 800-850 A.D. as the church of St. John was built in 900 A.D. Arahova (Arachova) with that name has been rewarded with a lot of honorable pages in the modern History of Greece.
In 1826 at the Arachovas’ battle victory, the Greeks over the Ottomans with their chief Georgios Karaiskakis injured deadly the Turkish chief Moustabey and together with the deep snow that was falling at that time turned the barbarians in disorderly withdrawal.

Arachovas' Easter

With all the processions and celebrations, Easters in Arahova are a great time to visit for a taste of the native culture. It is a treat for visitors to watch the native people in their national costumes as well as taste the traditional cuisine and wine.
Korikio Andro
by JLBG
From Arahova, a small road leads after 6 km to Koriκio Andro (Koριkιo Aνδρo) or Corycian cave (from the nymph Corcya), a cave that was already famous in the antiquity, visited by Nymphs and Pan with the Thyads. It is also named Pan’s cave
It is said that during the winter months the governing gods at Delphi celebrated Orgiastic rite at the cave with the local women acting as nymphs. « It is the most remarkable of all the caves I have seen », Pausanias notes, having visited it in the lst century AD..
The cavern itself is enormous, about 60 m long, 26 m wide and 12 m high. Thick stalactites hang from its roof, resembling "korikes" (leather pouch). Several inscription dating from the 4th century BC or the beginning of the 3rd century can be seen. The cave was excavated by French archaeologists in 1969 and produced a tremendous number of objects from all periods of antiquity. I have not found where they were on display. They should be in Delphi museum, but who knows !
The cave is open for visits but we missed it. As far as I know, there is no facility (light) and you should bring a powerful torch
Alternatively, Korikio Andro can be reached from Delphi by a lovely hike through the fir trees of Livadi. After 4 hours walk on the E4 European long distance trail, you will reach the cave.
Arachova

Arachova is a small town up in the mountains next to Delphi. Its quaint houses are built up on the north slopes of Mount Parnassos. The name Arachova derives from the South Slavic words ‘ara’ and ‘hova’, which mean ‘walnut trees’, in reference to the many ones found in the area. Year by year it welcomes more and more visitors, thanks to the nearby ski center too, the best one of Greece...
