More about Contessina Hotel

Flawless Contessina!!!

by TripAdvisor Member emg1987

We have just returned from a two week holiday in tsvilli, zante. The Hotel Contessina was absolutely magnificient & made our holiday a really enjoyable experience.
Me & my boyfriend travelled with my friend & her boyfriend. We chose tsvilli as we wanted a lively holiday but without the rowdiness & 24 hour party atmosphere of laganas. As we travelled at the back end of the season, (30th aug-13th sept) the resort was reasonably quiet on an evening, however, there are plenty of cocktail bars to keep you entertained. Especially Level bar! Go see Woody & he will teach you some great drinking games & fix you up with some brilliant cocktails! Try the blue dream...gorgeous! Go steady on the jelly beans! If it's presentation your after, go to the two brothers, i have never seen cocktails like it! big glasses with sparklers, all kinds of fruit, & lots of mixers with different things on the end & after that, there is actually a full glass of cocktail! Molly Malones is a good one if you like a good ol' drinking sesh (happy hour; 2 x pint size cocktails for 5 euros!)
We chose bed and breakfast for our holiday, and you certainly were spoilt for choice when choosing somewhere to eat for your evening meal. Zeus was our favourite, on the main street, which was a 2-5 min walk from the Contessina. Try the feta saganaki - that homemade tomato sauce is to die for! Another good restaurant is Nemesis, which is'nt far from Molly Malones bar. Set abit further up the main street it is a peaceful & relaxing atmosphere to enjoy your meal. Cannot fault the service, they just can't do enough for you. During our 2 week stay, we only had a couple of nights where we did'nt enjoy our meal. This is when we chose Dionisos restaurant which is set back from the main street. I'd advise against this, that's if you don't like bats flying above your head, a broken roof, poor service and food that looks (& tastes) like dog food!! Another bad experience was at Giorgios, which is opposite Zeus which is a thousand times better! Situated right on the main street it looks inviting, but the food is terrible. We ate there on our first evening there & did'nt know what to expect after that! Me and my partner had the lamb kleftiko & were both ill the following day. We thought we would give it another go however, & the second time was even worse! I stayed away from the meat & chose a pasta dish which was okay...just ok, if a bit bland, but the service...there only seemed to be 3 waiters working in a busy restaurant.
On a more pleasant note!...try the 'warm & fresh' bakeries for some yummy homemade ice cream & also make sure you pay a visit to the sisters at the gelato cafe, one word...WOW. Crepes (sweet/savoury), waffles & ice cream to die for. The presentation, the taste, just everything about it is brilliant. And a really reasonable price.
The hotel itself had a great atmosphere, Nikos & Jenny at the reception were brilliant and couldn't do enough to make our stay more enjoyable. Illios at the bar is a great laugh & makes ace cocktails! The hotel has recently been renovated and is very modern & comfortable. (Look at my pics for a better idea, although they dont do it justice).Only some of the rooms had been renovated, although we were allocated a basic room that had not been renovated and it was fine. Very clean, the housekeeping staff are magnificient and do a brilliant job.The bathroom is kept very clean, which is something i am very fussy about! It is located in an excellent position, just a minute walk to the main street. Literally a minute up the road, turn left & your on the main street. It is not noisy though, the only thing that you might hear is the kareoke that takes place in the hotel, i think on a thursday!
We went on the levante speedboat trip to see the smugglers cove & the blue caves which was a brilliant experience that has gotta be done if you're going to zante! One thing, make sure you wear your flip flops on the beach at the smugglers cove, the beach is actually little bits of limestone which reaaaaallllllyyyyy hurts your bare feet! But the scenery is absolutely beautiful & the sea so clear. An advantage of the speedbaot is that you actually go into the caves which is an excellent experience as you can see the different colours that are reflected in the caves & the coral underneath..i can't explain it, you need to see it.
Nothing else to say really! We strongly recommend the Hotel Contessina and Tsvilli in itself, a brilliant holiday that has something to entertain all ages. One of if the best hotel we have stayed in and is an excellent standard compared to other 3 star hotels in Greece, i'd give it 5 stars!!

brill refurb!!!

Last June 2006 Myself and five friends stayed at Hotel Contessina and had a lovely holiday, so much so we decided to return this May/June 2007. We had a fabulous holiday, weather was sometimes cloudy but always hot. On arrival at the hotel we were so surprised, the bar area and reception had been totally refurbished. It was very tastefully revamped so spacious. The bar and breakfast area, was light airy and very clean, as always. The staff are so friendly nothing is too much trouble, The standard of cleanliness is outstanding. Entertainment could do with a little improving, but they have a great karaoke!! Pool is excellent, and very adequate for the size of the hotel. Always plenty of sunbeds, A smashing little pool for the kiddies and a little playground. I found the breakfasts ok, plenty of fresh rolls, toast, preserves cheese ham, cereals, and usually, beans sausages and eggs. The lunchtime menu was extensive, very cheap and delish, again nothing was too much trouble. Reception open 24 hours, very helpful, internet access for 3 euros for half hour. A must have is Nikos's ' La Mumba' a hot choc drink with brandy...Wow.. and nikos not bad too, always fun, a great character behind the bar. Melly who serves luches and works in the bar area in the evening is simply delightful always beaming and very helpful. I cannot rave any more more about the hotel,it is a must. The resort is great, loads of restaurants and bars, you must try Manos, and Georgios. Food so reasonable and delish. Mind you, all the restaurants are good and all about the same pricewise. The beach is clean and has a blue flag. Lots of water sports, and bars that serve food. The sea is blue and so clear, plus ideal for children as you can walk out a long way and still only be waist high, and has a sandy bottom.
Tsilivi is a delightful resort, and on both occasions felt very safe especially at night, the locals very friendly. never saw any trouble in fact , never saw a policeman!! Try it for yourself and see.

Great Holiday Highly Recommended

We have just returned from a two week break to Zakynthos while staying at the contessina hotel.
Being our first time to any Greek island we wasnt quite sure of what to expect but when we arrived we was plesently surprised.
The hotel is about 20 minutes from the airport off the main road through tsilivi leading down to the beach.
On arrival we was greeted with a refreshing glass of orange juice to cool us down in the 30 degree heat.
We was taken through all the basic amenitees in the hotel. You can hire a safe deposit box for 35 euros a week and also air conditioning at 35 euros a week. We went for the safety deposit box but we didnt use the air con.
We was also told on arrival about sun beds around the pool and how the hotel dont want people saving sunbeds early in the morning. We took note of this but after getting up on our first full day at around 7.30am all the sunbeds had towels already on them. So if you want a sun bed you have to get up early to save yourself one. i noted people getting up from 5.30am onwards saving beds.
Our room was very nice . we had a double room with balcony. Shower room with toilet. it was very well decorated and always kept very clean. You cannot flush toilet roll down the toilet and have to use the bin so i advise using the toilets in the bar as it can get very hot in you room during the day.
The bar seemed always to be open and was very reasonably priced. Also during the day the bar done snacks.
Breakfast in the mornings was mainly continental but did have some hot food like beans, scrambled eggs and sausages.
If you want a full english breakfast there are plenty of cafes around that are open for breakfast. try next door to the contessina its only 5 euros and you wont come away hungry.
The beach is just a short walk down the road about 100 meters away. we spent alot of time here as you got a nice breeze off the sea. At the beach you got all the usual water sports. eg jet skis and banana boat. You can hire sun beds on the beach at 3 euros each at many of the bars on the beach and that all do snacks if you get hungry during the day.
Entertainment at the hotel during the week isnt too bad . they have the usual karaoke. They also do quiz nights bingo etc.
Entertainment to suit most tastes.
just a short walk from the hotel is the main road that runs from one end on tsilivi to the other. You have many shops resturants and bars to choice from. Best ones we found was two brothers, planet bar , and level bar. They have also got a night club called enigma which does a happy hour with two for one on all drinks.
There doesnt seem to be any age restriction on drinking alcohol so if you have teenagers and you let them go out alone be warned they will get served. You even see kids as young as eight working behing bars serving.
we traveled to the contessina with the my travel group and booked through direct holidays. be careful if you are traveling with these not to get ripped off. All excursions they try and sell are cheaper if you get them down the main road from any of the travel companies. same trips just cheaper. You are warned when you get picked up about Zante airport and you are warned about the airport and how bad it is and that you should book your return seats before you leave. we didnt have any problems at the airport and that we were siting together. it cost 9 euros to each to book your seat for the return trip. Dont do it its a rip off.
We also booked a trip to go to the water park which we booked through one of the local companies. It was a great day. loads of slides. food was very expensive and not very nice but apart from the that the whole day was great.
All in all its a great island and a great resort and we picked an excerlent hotel. You will have a great time. make sure you take the sun cream as it can get very hot up to 40 degrees. You will find there are plenty of places to eat and drink. loads of local trips you can book through local companies at very resonable rates.
i could write plenty more but if there is any thing more you would like to know please feel free to ask.
Highly recommended we will return.

Lovely Hotel

by TripAdvisor Member D4E

We only stayed at this hotel for 2 days, after leaving apartments at the other end of town which ,to say the least ,were 'not up to standard'. We had walked past the Contessina a few times during our week's stay and decided to ask on availability of a room for the last 2 days of our holiday. The reception staff were very helpful and we were given one of the newly refurbed rooms which was wonderful.
All we can say is a big THANKS to the Contessina for rescuing our holiday in Tsilivi, and if ever we visit Zante again, this is the hotel we will book.

Excellent stay

by TripAdvisor Member NattyLondon

My boyfriend and I stayed at this hotel for a week from 17th June and we loved it. From the moment we arrived we were made to feel at home and were given a glass of juice, which was much appreciated in the 40 degree heat! Check in was very fast and the reception staff were lovely and helpful - especially Jenny!
The room was comfortable and had everything we needed and extremely clean. In fact the whole hotel seemed to get a good scrub everyday!
Lovely pool, it could get a bit busy around lunchtime but we didnt notice too much bed hogging going on. Even so, the beach is just a 2 minute walk away and its lovely with beautiful clear waters.
The location was just down a side road off the main strip so again, its all really close. We loved the Sunset Cafe and Level - great if you like the cocktails!
We'd definitely stay here again, especially compared to a lot of the hotels in the resort. Excellent!

Loved the place

This Hotel was booked for our daughters wedding by her travel Agent (a excellent choice) so much that the 21 other guests all booked the same hotel but through a different agent. The staff were excellent, pleasant, friendly, helpful and always so polite and smiling. A credit to its owner. The room standard was great and the cleanliness was was the best l have ever seen at an hotel abroad and l have seen many in my years of travelling abroad.
Overall an excellent choice and a really pleasant ambience to enjoy the relaxing holiday that you look forward too.
Would happily recommend this hotel to anyone and thanks for a pleasant and most enjoyable stay.

One down side Evening entertainment needs to be improved.

Very Nice Hotel - High Standard for Greece

by TripAdvisor Member T0ffee_Girl

Had a week at this hotel with my husband plus his three grown up kids and their partners. The hotel was great. I have stayed on quite a few Greek islands in my time and feel that this was probably the best quality hotel of all previous Greek ones. The communal areas were really nicely appoointed with modern, comfortable fixtures and fittings - boutiqueish in style. The rooms themselves were not modernised to the same standard but not as basic as many Greek ones I have had before and certainly roomy and comfortable enough. Of the four rooms we had, 3 had very good powerful showers but the other had one of those shower heads that seemed to have a mind of its own - squirting everywhere but where you need it. That said, the shower was replaced on the second day without us even mentioning it so they do seem to keep on top of their maintenance. Air con units are in the room but these are payable locally. We didn't bother as, although the weather was very hot, it did cool down quite a bit at night. I would think that it would be essential a little later in the year though. About 40 euros per week I believe. You can also hire a fridge if you want to but we didn't bother. We did hire a safety deposit box which are located just off reception and cost 15 euros for the week - they are quite large so one was Ok for all 7 of us.

The pool area was really nice and we had no trouble getting beds (though we are early risers). Breakfast was good for a Greek hotel. Quite often in Greece you get just juice, eggs, tomato, cucumber, yoghurt, bread, melon etc but here there was a really good selection. All of that stuff but also hot stuff (beans, sausages, french toast, toast machine etc), cereals, cakes and really good coffee and tea.

In terms of the hotel entertainment, we didn't really make any use of it as we tended to go in to the resort in the night. However, they do have a nice bar with very friendly staff plus themed evenings like karaoke, quizzes etc.

The resort itself is a little different to the type of place that my husband and I usually pick but was ideal for the group we were with this time - my husband (52), me (34) and the 'kids' (all now in their 20's). It was not a throbbing clubland like Laganas but had a good selection of shops, tavernas and cocktail bars to make your way around at night. Not for those who really want a quiet get away but ideal for those who want somewhere with a bit of life without feeling obliged drink themselves in to a coma at a foam party!!

All in all a great place to stay for a holiday which offers comfort and lazy days but with a bit of life at night. The only negatives about the hotel are really that the air con, safe and fridge all cost extra. That said, that is fairly standard for Greece and the hotel is probably a bit cheaper than others which offer these things inclusive (its just that you always feel a bit put out when you have to pay on arrival!!). Happy to answer any questions about the hotel or resort/island if i can - toffeegirl@tiscali.co.uk

Keep this place a secret!

I cannot fault this hotel at all it's is a brilliant place lets not tell anyone about it!!!

The staff front of house and behind the scenes are a credit to the hotel. Jenny, Ilios, Mel & Nikos work really hard to make your stay enjoyable nothing is too much trouble for them

When we were going on early excursions it wasn't any trouble for us to have breakfast earlier.

The hotel is immaculate and the bar area is really nice. We had one of the new doubles overlooking the pool which we really liked

It's such a relaxing friendly place I can't wait to go again

The hotel is in a great location close to the beach, the shops are really close by and so are the bars and tavernas.

Lovely hote

by TripAdvisor Member Charlie-Jos

I picked this hotel using the information supplied on Trip Advisor and was not disappointed. Its a very nice hotel by Greek standards. The rooms have recently been upgraded and are spacious and comfortable. We had one overlooking the pool which was a bonus. Tsilivi is not much to write home about and lacks some atmosphere but for a week at this time of year it hits the mark. The restaurants are plentilful and good value. Our favourite was Zeus where the staff could not be nicer and the food superb and its only two minutes from the hotel. Try to stick to the more traditional Greek tavern type eating places and you will not be disappointed. Thoroughly recommended.

Great hotel with great staff

by TripAdvisor Member HippieChick03

My sister lives in Athens and we just wanted a little break so we chose Zakynthos as it's easy to get to, did a little search on hotels and initially were going to stay at the place next door, but there was no lift and my sister has asthma....so, went to the contessina, we were impressed as soon as we walked in as it was modern and tasteful, the rooms were the same, spacious, overlooking the pool with flat screen and nice verandah. The room will be cleaned every day if you want, just leave the hanger on the handle!
The pool was lovely as was the pool bar with great staff who basically made the visit an extremely enjoyable experience. They go out of their way for you, recommending places to eat, visit etc
There is internet access and a chill out area to watch tv as well as a pool table if the pubs/bars of Tsilivi aren't your thing.

If i was ever to return to Zante....i'd be booking this hotel, even as a base from which to explore.

Enjoy!

Laganas in May

by mariakaptein

Hello, I will visit Zante and esp. Laganas in May and stay in
a hotel app. 500 meters from the main street. My question is:
will it allready be crowded with (drunken) English tourists..?
I will rent a scooter and do walks/trekkings and visit villages
monasteries etc.
Thanks, maria

Re: Laganas in May

by smirnofforiginal

LOL .... because we English tourists are the only people that visit Zante? or because no other nation drinks?

It is many years ago since I visited Zante and yes, Laganas is full of British holiday makers (and many of whom I would not wish to be in the company of!) but I was never disturbed by anything more riotous than 2 Scots sitting on chairs outside my hotel room having a (drunken) loud heart to heart - that was annoying but, I put that down to staying along the tourist drag - same as anywhere; in any part of the world, with people from all over the world... guess you will get your answer first hand soon enough!

good luck!

Re: Laganas in May

by Ouzone

Yes, I am English and have stayed in hotel right on the main street in Laganas in June which is mid-season. Not on a package however, I stayed in Alykes as well, part of backpacking through the Ionion islands.

You should be OK in May as the yobbo/brain dead element tends to turn up in peak season around July/August. If in doubt however, go and stay somewhere else like Alykes, though still a substantial UK element they do have some remaining brain cells, and you won't see gangs of drunks there.

It's not just UK people either, drunks come in all European nationalities.

Re: Laganas in May

by intertraveler

Hi,
We stayed at Argassi early May last may. we went for a night out with two young couples to Laganas one night I would say around the 7th May and it was very quite.
Also the price of the drinks down the main street are expensive.
