More about Hotel Mavrikos
totally disegree with bad reviews (tim @june)
we first visited the mavrikos in 2002 we have stayed in both the apartments and bed and breakfast the staff from day one were very fiendly and helpfull no problem to big or to small we enjoyed the company of other holiday makers in a nice friendly atmosphere
the owners john and marie-annes and their daughters could not do enough for us so much we decided to get married there in 2004 we were the first couple to do this jean was the wedding organiser and she did a brilliant job we had nothing to worry about and since then threre has been alot more weddings there as for for the rooms being cleaned they were always spotless unless you told the maids not to clean and then they would tell you they had too we would sit on the balcony having a coffee while they did
I bet the people who gave bad reviews still took home their free gift from john and marie-annes which they do not have to give but they do because they care about the people in there hotel jean is brilliant she looks after everyone in the day adults and kids alike keith and the bar staff are brilliant also while people are sleeping yannis the night security man makes sure everthing is secure what ever time you get in and makes sure you get to your room safley we have travelled widley around the greek islands at least twice a year from three* five* and would definetly go back here again which we have and will be renewing our wedding vows there in 2014 there is not much more we can add apart from if you want a good holiday on a lovley island not forgetting the main square in the harbour in the night time when the locals come out and treat you as a long lost friend
then we would highly reccommend the mavrikos hotel and check out the hospitality and friendship shown by all there and you will visit once and want to go back again ,believe us its a great place with great people.
what can i say !
firstly i would like to say i love greece and have stayed in many types of accomadation and have never had a problem, however!!!!!
we arrived early hours and dismissed our first concerns till we had a sleep.however on waking i promptly jumped out of the bed grabbing the blankets of me and my 4 year old son as i could see the WHITE stains all over us.
As we continued to look around the two bed apartment we we all discusted.in we i mean myself, partner, sister in law and 2 children. there was stains and dirt all over the floor and scum in the kitchen and bathroom. The shock came when we saw feaces all around the toilet and along the tiles under the bath.
We complained and were told someone would take a look but they didnt come so i took photos with my phone.when i explained to the women on reception she said she would come and look. By the time she arrived we couldnt wait and had bleached the entire room and bathroom, kitchen, and bedroom. She said "whats the problem"so we showed her the photos.
she got someone to move us straight away and then the owner who was very unconcerned told us that we had got the cleaner sacked! I think that was the least of there problems and should sack the entire hotel staff (exept for the owners daughter who was very concerned with our treatment).
At one point before the move the owner said that we hadnt paid much so what did we want,i wasso shocked i couldnt reply but would have said "not human waste on the walls".
we were offered a drink and we did except so thanks for that!.
Our overall opinion of the place was dirty and tired and after being reccommended this hotel over another by a travel adviser i was sad.we didnt spend any time there and used the other apartments were we were willing to spend our money.
this was called the st denis and was brilliant.i have been to many resorts in zante and love them even tsillivi was lovley and would reccommend it to every one.the food is great, beaches are beautifull and the people are so friendly on a whole.
i will be going back but not to this hotel if they payed me!!!!!!!
The Bar Staff Are The Only Reason To Return.
The hotel has been built into a side of a hill and has a steep climb to the front gate; at the height of summer there is little escape from the heat as high walls on most sides surround the pool area that is at the front of the hotel. There is a poolside bar run by Jean during the day and Keith at night, both of whom are like local celebrities that have been there for many years giving great service to all guests and probably the reason why many people return year after year. Prices for alcoholic drinks are reasonable but the price of milkshakes, slush puppies and ice-lollies are quite expensive. A full English breakfast is served at the bar until midday and lunch until 4.00 pm.
The décor of the rooms are spared of any luxury and have a very small bathroom which large individuals might find extremely difficult. Most don’t have a bath and you have to hold the shower hose over your head, as they didn’t think to put in an attachment, the shower cubicle itself is tiny. The toilet is built into the corner in front of the sink and you have to position yourself at an angle to be able to use it. The rooms are cleaned every day but not to a good standard and for the two-week duration our sheets were changed once. Although each room has air conditioning and a TV they come as an additional cost as does the use of all other facilities such as the table tennis, pool table and the launderette.
On the positive side the pool area is quite lively and has plenty of shade, sun-beds, satellite TV and music playing throughout the day. There is a small children’s play area that is right at the back of the hotel but be careful of sending children in there without shoes as they always come out with black feet due to the rubber mats. Entertainment during the nights is limited and not as good as reported in previous years, however the social scene is good and everyone has the opportunity to make friends with other guests.
I would not recommend booking bed and breakfast for two reasons; you probably won’t get a family room if you have small children and the continental breakfast is really bland. There are plenty of good restaurants to eat out and would highly recommend The Family Restaurant and Valentina’s Castle as the best for quality, service and value. For a quick snack there’s a Macdonald’s for those who can’t help themselves and a really good kebab place called Gyroland that serves a good selection of food and has a sports bar.
The beach is nice and great for the kids but its at least 15-20 minutes away and at twice the reported 700 metres in the brochures. One other thing to bear in mind are the hawkers who constantly invade all areas trying to sell you things or offer you a massage. Overall it was a good holiday as long as you have a make-do attitude but I doubt that I would return to this hotel.
Had a fabulous time.....
We stayed at this hotel in August of this year. We all had a fab time and thats all 11 of us! The hotel was very friendly and a sociable place to be. The hotel staff are lovely and eager to please. The pool area and outdoor area are kept clean and tidy all the time. The rooms are on the small side and we had to move the beds to open the balcony doors. The sheets semed to be changed on an adhoc basis so we decided to screw them up and throw them on the floor to see if they were changed. They were!! Air conditioning is a must although you may need a blanket as the rooms get quite cold...Previous reviews have suggested that regular customers form 'clicks'. We did not notice this and everyone spoke to us and we met some regulars too! The pool bar and staff are fantastic and our thanks go to Jean who had all the people in the pool and bar singing "Happy Birthday" to our four year old! It was lovely and we will never forget this.... The hill up to the hotel described as a slight incline changes into Mount Kilimanjaro in the heat. My father in law described the hotel entrance as the gates of Heaven! Altogether a lovely hotel and friendly staff, would come here again in the future.....
Shame about the maid service
First impressions of the hotel and our room were clean and comfortable with all amenities we would need for our two week stay here. However, as I have walking difficulties, we hadn't been made aware of the steep incline to this hotel, approx 100 yards of a gentle slope with a further 100 yards of steep gradient, not good with chronic back pain, believe me.
3 things we could see lets this hotel down, firstly the cost of non-alcoholic drinks, so if you have children, do not drink here, the costs are extortianate. Secondly, the rule is 'no sunbeds to be reserved'. However, its embarrassing to see Brits behaving so childishly like our German friends by doing such a lousy trick, especially when older people would like somewhere to sit for the day. Lastly, the most important thing this hotel is doing by letting down its guests, is providing a maid service we have never experienced before. Towels do not get changed, bedding not changed unless you ask for it, room not swept in the two weeks we were here, and nor did they even wipe the bathroom down for our 14 night duration. To make matters worse, as you can't throw toilet paper down the toilet (which we knew about prior to coming to Greece), you have to use the bin provided. However, when the maids come to empty this bin, they leave the same bin liner in day after day...oh, and its not a proper bin liner in most cases...its a used Sainsbury's bag or similar.
On a lighter note, the chip butties available from the pool bar and huge and good value for money. The staff are friendly, especially Mary the receptionist who was lovely and is a great asset to this hotel, we just hope management see this. She is the lady who went to get us new towels and spare toilet rolls which the maids should ahve done earlier in the day.
There is a small balcony with clothes dryer/clothes horse thingy to dry your clothes. Self catering rooms have microwaves, small cooker, fridge.
Aircon for your room is available at a local charge of approx 3 Euros per day.
Hotel offers internet for 3 Euros for half an hour, but if you go to the bowling alley called 'Bowl 'em over', its 3 Euros for one hour with webcams and all mod cons better than the hotels' p.c.
Lots of local restaurants serving great food, we especially liked Pieros and also Magdelenas for belly-busting English breakfasts for about 4 to 5 Euros each. Not too sure what all the hype is about with Popeyes restauarant, but its everone to their own. A nice Indian restauarnt is The Asian Palace about a 3/4 mile walk from the Mavrikos or 5 Euros in a taxi. The food here is of similar expectations to UK Indian restaurants, and if you like hot curry, try the Phal...its spot on!
To recap, hotel is in a good quiet location, but close enough for bars/restaurants. Be aware of the hill leading to the hotel, and also keep mithering the maids for clean towels. We put a mark on ours so we knew they had been changed after we left them in the shower tray.
Be also wary of the resident cats and kittens, they're carrying more than just fleas (large ticks in their fur).
Best Ever Holiday
Just come back from Mavrikos and after reading some of the reviews was not quite sure what to expect but it just goes to show that some of these reviews are inaccurate. The rooms were very clean and on an 11 day holiday the bed linen was changed 5 times and if a towel was dirty and put in the bath that was also changed. The reception staff were all very helpful and the pool bar staff were excellent and made sure you all enjoyed yourself, gave you hints on places to go and places to eat. Jean and Gabby were especially fab. The only downside was the steep hill leading up to the hotel but if you took your time it was okay. Graces Bar just outside the hotel did a fab breakfast, all english stuff and real bread!! We ate at several restaurants on a night and can recommend Pieros, Athena, Family, Sweet Revenge, Passage to India and I am sure there are many other excellent places but we did not have time to sample them all. As for the food being expensive well it depended what you ordered and if you want to eat the best steaks etc then you have to be prepared to pay for them. The Lifetime Beach bar is lovely but do remember that you have to pay for the sunbeds. We went on the full day island cruise and really enjoyed this but we were lucky enough to be the first on the boat and got a sunbed to lie on. The boat can hold 500 people but there are only about 20 sunbeds so everyone else just has to sit on a normal seat and if that had happened to me I would not have been very happy. We will definitely be returning again as we found this resort to have just the right amount of nightlife for us as an older couple.
Won't be returning here
Arrived at hotel last week and was utterly disgusted with the room we were given.no wardrobes, doors didnt close, damp stench throughout, kitchen was awful (Room 511). Had a word with receptionist, who moved us to a much cleaner, better room. I found that there is a definite click here with regular british holidaymakers and thats maybe why some of the staff at the hotel get such high reviews and praises, beacuase to be honest we didnt recieve any 'exceptional service' and id like to know what it is that makes the likes of jean so great. The only thing that we found good was the help off gabby when we arrived with our baggage. We are a young early 20's couple who dont have a care in the world and try our best to interact and be positive to everyone, but this hotel was clearly for a different generation. There was no evening entertainment, mybe this was due to the time of the season. Other people have mentioned the stray cats, and i must admit they will bother you when eating.Possibly the reason for violent sickness during our stay.
However, the room was cleaned daily with fresh towels provided. There were no great balcony views from the hotel either. The island itself is beautiful with many different activities, and in Tsilivi i would recommend a trip to the paradise bar in the evening, its pretty crazy when it gets going with the likes of stavros behind the bar.
Overall, a very good holiday, but would definetly choose a hotel nearer the beach.
Also the reptile house is amazing and so cheap for what you get, well worth a visit!!
Worse Hotel Ever
This hotel is the worse one we have ever stayed in. The staff were not very friendly, the room was very small and the furniture very grotty, the bed was like a board and the bathroom very small. The Paradise Bar was great and Stravous very funny. The island is beautiful and we will definitely be returning but definitely not to this hotel, would not recommend it to anyone.
Well what can I say really, I feel VERY let down. myself and my partner stayed at the mavrikos may and what a let down. Both of us are early 20s and don't complain about much but seriosly this hotel is awful. This is the forst time to the hotel and you could spot the regulars from a mile off......
Swimming Pool is lovely and very clean and a decent size... and hotel looks really nice from the outside
Rooms were an utter disgrace,I coulnd't believe the mess. Ok we went at the beginning of the season and didn't we know it, the room smelt of damp and there was cutlery left in the sink DIRTY the doors didn't close properly, our balcony view was a view of trees no wardrobes, microwave door hanging off, and that was before I looked at the bed linen................. So I went to see the receptionist who basically said someone will be round to fix the door...no one came so i had a more POLITE word and end up lagging 4 adult suitcases up 3 flites of stairs to a "more comfortable" room, this room was basic and was we was able to clean it ourselves to make it livable, but I would NEVER have used the kitchen...
Staff were polite enough and smiled, didn't do anything exceptional apart from do their job, when I read about Jean and Keith I couldnt wait to meet them, but again Nothing exceptional, keith obviously having a bad week and Jean must have been due for her period or something.
Hotel was in a good location, middle of the town but away from all the hussle and bussle, beach was not 700m away as it states in brochure more of a 15/20 minute walk. Hotel was up a steep hill so people with walking difficulties would find this a bit difficult.
THINGS TO DO
Waterpark is a must its only 9euro in a taxi (or you can go by coach) and cost 18 Euro in, not much their as still building but still a great day out
Turtle island is also a good day out and get to go snorkling in the lovely waters what you can only reach by boat
All sorts of beach buggys, quads, cars, bikes etc all around the island if you wanted to rent one for reasonable prices, you must have your license though.
Plenty of bars and resturants to choose from, Paradise bar at the end of Mavrikos is a good time, they will make sure your happy and stavros is a legend
Overall Holiday was fab but definately won't be returning to the hotel, will be returning to the island next year.
We've been twice to Mavrikos and had a great time both time. The facilities are fantastic and the staff helpful..especially when my son was burning up with tonsilitis, they gave us a fan for 2 days FOC. The rooms were swept and mopped every day as I remember and the linen changed regular. Another thing we liked is the fact there is a seperate pool for kids, my young one loved it. Though the hotel is approx 15min walk away from the beach, its a good excuse to walk through the town & savor the shops and sights that you may well miss being nearer. Though its not a problem for us, I can see the walk up the hill being an issue for some. But coming down leads you straight in to the bars/restaurants and shops.
When finances allow, we will be heading back there. Who knows, we might even get a 'welcome back' bottle of bubbly again like we had the 2nd time we went.
We have just booked 2 wks in Zante in June this yr staying at the Mavrikas through Sky Travel has anyone stayed there? or read any reviews?
Thanks in advance xx
