Andreas Embeirikos
by AndyRG
At the same square, there is the bust of this spiritual personality of Andros. Andreas Embeirikos (1901-1975), a great poet and psychiatrist, was the main representative of surrealism in Greece (together with the poet, and painter, Nikos Engonopoulos).
The Museum of Modern Art
by AndyRG
It is a "must" for everyone who is interested in arts. The museum is divided in two buildings, near the sea. It was founded by Vasilis and Elisa Goulandris. Inside it, there is a permanent collection of the sculptor Michalis Tombros (1889-1974), who comes from the island. You can also see important temporary exhibitions.
The year I had been there (2002), the "guest of honour" was Miro, my favorite painter. The exhibition about him was really great, you could admire more than 100 paintings, sculptures, drawings and textiles of him. Unfortunately, it was forbidden to take any pictures (I was unlucky again with them, see my tip about the Miro Foundation in Barcelona).
Joan, I want a third rendezvous with you!
Also, you can visit the "Petrou and Marika Kidonieos Foundation", other important art exhibitions are held there every summer. That time, Greek painters Fasianos, Stefanou and Sperantzas presented their excellent work.
Agios (Saint) Georgios
by AndyRG
It is not the biggest church of Hora, but maybe the nicest. Agios Georgios is near the Nautical Museum. The colours, white and blue, are the typical ones for any kind of building at the cycladic islands. They are the colours of Greece...
Andros(Hora), the capital
by mindcrime
The first time I visited Andros island at Cyclades complex in Greece I stayed at Batsi like most of the tourists do.
Two days after I visited Andros(Hora), the capital of the island and I felt in love with it! Andros is picturesque and so nice! Less crowdy but full of friendly local people. This is a page for Andros town (Hora) so if you want to check the rest of the island see my Andros Island page.
There are many nice museums like the archeological museum (don’t miss the roman copy of Hermis statue), the exceptional Museum of Modern Art, the nautical museum (you can see models of ships sailed from here) etc
