This is one of the small number of hotels that are opened year round on the island. It is very clean, friendly, and has magnificent views. I would stay here anytime- wish I was there now! The view- many tourists gathered at vantage points next to or behind the Loucas, but all I had to do was open my door!
Beware: like all hotels on the cauldera, there are LOTS of stairs to navigate here. Pack light.

Has anyone stayed at either of these hotels? I want a view of the sunset and a good location in Fira. Will both of these serve my needs? Is one more romantic than the other? Any advice or insight into these hotels would be appreciated!
Kavalari is in a much better location. If you stay at the Astir and want to watch the sunset from your balcony you'll be distracted by the traffic and noise passing by on the road outside. All the buses, motorcycles, cars and trucks going to the port as well as to the south end of the island will be passing by right under your balcony.
Also check the Scirocco Hotel, Loucas Hotel and Villa Ilias.
