More about Majestic Hotel
Lovely Hotel- but something missing
This a beautifully designed hotel and the pictures you see on the website are very accurate. I visited in early May and it was very quiet during the day, although breakfast time was busy. The breakfast
buffet is good with a wide range of dishes. the pool area is very nice with lots of loungers. The service is not very pro active but the staff are effcient and polite when approached. Its difficult to put my finger on it, perhaps it is because it is soooo quiet or because the decor is very sparse and minimalist but is just does not feel like a 5 star hotel, more like a very nice apartment.
All style, no substance plus horrific customer service
My husband and I are frequent travelers, who have visited a range of properties from high end resorts to modest inns. Beyond location, our key criteria is customer service.
We decided to travel through Turkey and Greece for our honeymoon. We selected the Majestic Hotel based on a recommendation from a close friend.
The positives are (1) close proximity to Fira, (2) modern, minimalist decor (think W Hotel chain) and (3) complimentary breakfast buffet.
However, the negatives far outweigh the positives. The critical shortcoming is a lack of customer-service orientation. When approached with an issue, the front desk and general manager became defensive. Rather than acknowledgement and empathy, they react with disbelief and arrogance.
For example, we contacted the hotel in advance via email to notify them of our honeymoon and request a single bed. When we were shown to a room with double bed, they were surprised to hear of our request. In fact, the General Manager flatly stated that they don't receive 50% of their emails. Is this type of defensiveness warranted? A simple apology would suffice.
Other negatives include (1) general degree of aloofness when answering inquires for directions (e.g. handed a map without any commentary), (2) lack of help with luggage up front steps (no active doorman), (3) partially pirated collection of DVDs (e.g. some are scratched and won't play correctly), and (4) poorly designed bath tub /shower curtain so water runs out to the floor.
If you value substance over style, this is not the place for you. In the future, I'd rather stay at the Iliovasilema or the Vedema. Santorini is a small island so location is not a big differentiator.
Although the Majestic Hotel promotes itself as the "most prestigous 5 star hotel on the island of Santorini", it's not possible to claim that title without superior customer service. Based on the poor attitude of the General Manager and indifference of the front desk staff, the self-proclaimed title would be the overstatement of the year. Book at your own risk.
Great for a relaxing vacation!
The location is a 5 minute walk from the biggest town on Santorini--great for going out at night. And, the hotel's interior design and architecture make it amazing. Definitely upgrade your room for the caldera view, it's lovely! Sadly, the staff could not have been locals as they knew little of the 6 mile long island but were helpful with what information they could provide to us.
It was too cold (75 F with strong winds) to go swimming, but the pool looked nice. Advertisements say they have a Jacuzzi, but they really only have Jacuzzi bathtubs in the rooms.
Be aware that the beach is 20 minutes away and $15 taxi ride each way from the Majestic. I would definitely recommend getting your own transportation if you're there for more than one day. You can rent a scooter, 4-wheeler or car. Rick Steve's guide book said it's too dangerous to get a scooter, but since we visited in May and not peak tourist time, we took our chances. There were plenty of VERY scary moments (especially on the road to Oia!). For us, it was a great way to see Santorini!
Santorini was a great time and the Majestic was expensive, but a nice way to spoil ourselves at the end of a Backpacking trip!
Hated the Majestic
We recently honeymooned in Greece ending our trip in Santorini. We booked the Majestic under the impression that it was a 5 star resort. Immediately upon arrival we discovered it was not. The main problem is its located on the main road in Santorini, so as your looking out of your balcony or patio you see and hear constant cars, buses, and motorcycles. Facing the other direction there are fields with farm animals followed by rooftops of houses. The ocean is in view on both sides but not without these obstructions. Another issue was the decor looked more like an Ikea catalog rather than modern and chic.
We ended up switching hotels immediately and went to a 4 star property, The Belvedere, which was much better.
With so many hotels right on the cliffs in Santorini, why anyone would want to stay at the Majestic is beyond me.
A bad option
Disapointment is the word for this hotel. Is is a very bad option. Santorini is only incredible because of the views it offers. The pictures at the hotel website lets one imagine that the hotel is right on the cliff, because of the angles the pictures are taken. On the contrary, the hotel is right on a not charming at all main road, with a lot of traffic noise and the views are not great at all. The staff was kind as we decided to change hotels (although they did charge us for that) but theres no charm at all. Tons of better options around.
Don't spend your well earned money here! Service needs to improve.
Didn't enjoy it at all. Despite the glitzy building, the nice-ish rooms, the good breakfasts with good staff here at least something is missing. I fully agree with some of the other recent reviews about the poor customer service. Travelling with a 4month old baby we needed a kettle, not something too outlandish to ask for. It was for them, we had to ask 4 times and only got it delivered thanks to our local travel rep' who intervened? Why? What happened to looking after the customer? I agree with the comments on the bathrooms, the shower hose was too short so when in it's holder it was all kinked and not very wet at all. I wish we had stayed somewhere with less facilities but with more charm and character and some friendly reception staff. The whole experience was very sterile, we felt very aware travelling with a baby if he made any noise. The pool area was like a wake and it was great to see more families arrive half way thru our stay. Even an older couple we spoke to had the same comments so dont think this is purely selfish here. Shame the patios werent under cover, we had rain for a couple of days and felt trapped in the room, even in August they have rain (got flooded last year) so not as funny comment as you may think.
On a separate subject DON'T be tempted to visit Nik's Taverna in Fira itself. You might here stories about it being so "quirky" the guy doesnt have even menus. Course he does, they are just in his head. The queues are out the door for some reason. It cant be the food, my greek lasagne was hot in patches which suggested the old microwave was in use.
We have just returned from a seven-day vacation in Santorini, where we stayed in the Majestic. It was one of our best vacations. We have been frequent visitors of Santorini and usually we have been staying in hotels on the cliff. We were tired of having to climb up and down so many stairs every day to get to our room, so this year we chose to avoid the caldera. That was one of the best possible decisions. In the Majestic we did not miss the view, which is absolutely amazing, while we had easy access to the city center. It is ideal if you rent a car, since the hotel is one of the few on the island with parking, so you can visit every village.
The staff was very friendly and keen to assist us in every way possible. The breakfast was so rich that we did not know what to choose, while the gourmet restaurant in the evening provided an excellent relaxing choice for a quite dinner. The rooms were so comfortable and stylish with all the amenities that we would expect from a hotel of such standards. The amazing thing with the pool is that if feels as if you are in the air, you see nothing but the sky.
If you are looking for a relaxing holiday with no noise avoiding the chaotic madness of the center then we would definitely recommend the Majestic.
I spent 3 nigths at The Majestic Hotel in my honeymoon trip. The overall hotel is very nice, modern and with a lot of facilities.
The room is spacious, the bed and the pillow preatty nice and confortable. Very nice indeed.
The view to the volcano is nice but it is not as good as if you stay in a hotel in the cliff. For me it was fine because we did not stay at the hotel during the day.....
The hotel is located 5 min walk from the main center of Fira town and there is not problem at all to go walking....
The breakfast and the dinner is very good also.
The access to the rooms don´t have a roof to protect from the rain. Thanks God it was not rainning during my stay but it may be an issue.
The staff is nice but not soooo friendly as they could be.
