VT Pirate ship trip to Thirassia
Off Santorini, near Oia, THIRASSIA is the largest of a chain of islets formed by volcanic activity and the only one inhabited. It is across the Caldera from Santorini.
It's sole village, Horio, is a pretty place with whitewashed houses, reached by a flight of 250 steps from the landing-place.
On Saturday, a large group of VTers went on the Island of Thirassia as part of the Pirate Ship trip. We all went up by donkeys (see my "Donkey" travelogue ) up to the Panorama Restaurant where we had lunch of traditional Greek food. There was amazing views from up there.

"Volcano Island"
In the heart of the Cyclades, in the Eigean Sea, this Island is very special. Special because it has been created by a volcano explosion... So you have the old volcano in the middle, and all around it big cliffs created by the explosion. Houses are built exactly at the peak of this cliffs, giving a dramatic view over the volcano and the sea, giving the feeling you are going to fall in the water from the 300 m high you are...

If you are young and good mood and not rich, so I am, you MUST stay at the youth Hostel in Thira, because it's cheap and very welcoming and well positionned.
I met cool friends there, youth hostel ambiance...
The problem with Santorini is it's impressive touristic attraction, and if you arrive by boat, you will feel like sheeps called by hundreds of sheppards trying to make you go in the direction they want to...
That's why it is nice to know where to stay before boarding out...
But once you are on the Island, you will quickly forget about this massive tourism because there is os much to see and it is easy to find streets empty of tourist, because sheeps just go where the others go...
Loose yourself in the little snake-like streets and you will find all the magic of maybe the most incredibe of all Greek Islands...
"the best time to get there"
May - June is the best time to travel there, flowers are coming out everywhere and tourism level is still decent... ;o)
