First time to Santorini/Thira

by IffyMiffy

I'm heading to Thirai the last week of September and would love to hear about any recommendations or advice you may have for a first visit to the island. Can you help me out? Thanks...

Santorini is my most favorite place in the world. It's an interesting island with some archaeological sites, Akrotiri and Ancient Thira. Because the whole island was once a volcano that exploded in a major cataclysm 3500 years ago, the views from the remaining land mass into what was once the volcano's caldera are spectacular. I recommend the most beautiful and traditional village of Oia on the north end of the island. In late September you will have no problem finding a place to stay there, a reservation will not be needed. If you're arriving by ferry just take the port bus into the main village of Fira and then another bus or taxi to Oia. Walk from the bus square up past the restaurant to the main square in the center of the village, then walk either way along the pathway to find many places with rooms for rent. Late September prices should be down significantly from the summer rates. The weather should still be nice and warm during the day. The nights might be a littly chilly and possibly windy as well. Enjoy!

Travel Tips for Fira

Caldera Path

by steventilly

The caldera rim path starts from in front of the Orthodox cathedral and continues along the cliff side as far as the end of Imerovigli (and right to Oia 12km away if you're feeling up to it). You can't get lost from this path; after all it hugs the cliff, so I don't need to give directions. What is along the path varies from point to point, sometimes shops, sometimes tavernas, sometimes accommodation, sometimes nothing at all, but always fantastic views. Along its length you will catch glimpses down to the old port at the bottom of the cliffs, the cable cars that run up and down to it and the donkey steps, sometimes filled with the whole herd(?) of donkeys traipsing up with their cruise ship passengers.
In places there are a few steps to climb, but never more than a few at once, and on the whole it's flat and easy going. At various points in Fira, Firostefani and Imerovigli there are steps leading down to lower levels, which are mainly access for hotels etc. but still provide picturesque detours and are worth a bit of exploration.
