Fira - The Orthodox Cathedral

The Orthodox Cathedral is also called the church of Ypapantis or Panagia to Belonia. The original church on this site was built by M. Belonia in 1827, but was completely destroyed by the last major earthquake and was replaced by the current Cathedral. While in Santorini we took a few moments to view the inside of the Cathedral and returned on Sunday for a few moments to watch a small part of the mass being conducted.

There is a large square in front of the church that served as the meeting point for all of the Vters attending the VT meeing in June 2007. It is an easily accessed central location. If you plan to meet someone in Santorini its a good focal point.

"VIEWS FROM OUR HOTEL TERRACE"

Hans and I had the good fortune to have picked a wonderful hotel - the Kavalari. I was in awe of the flowers, gardens and wonderful views from the terraces throughout the hotel. Right outside our room, there was a terrace with this cactus blooming. I thought it was such a thing of beauty. This bloom was the last one and I was lucky enough to witness it.
The hotel is tiered, so every few steps you have another view. One couple from the USA always sat at the same table for breakfast, as they have been doing every year for the past several years. I guess they were just mesmerized with the views before them, as were we.
