Pension Galini: Hotel on Schinoussa

by boxerdogheidi

We were in Schinoussa in September. VERY quiet. Stayed at Pension Galini. He meets the boats. 30 euro per night for 3 people, with kitchenette. Very clean. It is located at the far end of the town and the view from the front of the pension was of one side of the island and the view from the back was of the other side of the island. There were nice verandahs with flowering plants to sit out on. The owner speaks enough english, and his wife speaks none. She served us coffee and fruit on their terrace when we got there. There were two quiet beaches we walked to. Weather was hot in September and I think it would be in June too. There were still enough restaurants open in September, and a couple of stores where you could buy groceries and beer.Don't think I would want to stay more than a week.If it's your first trip to Greece you really should go to Santorini for a day. I don't think I can attach photos with this but if you leave your email address I can send you some of Schinoussa and Pension Galini.

Great views.

Korali Garden Hotel: Attitude is everything.

by IoannaE

I thought this was in the middle of nowhere when I arrived, driven there by one of the owners who picked me up at the port - I had booked by e-mailing a few days earlier. And then, seeing my misgivings, he said "There's absolutely no obligation to stay, take a look if you wish, but if you decide you'd rather be elsewhere, I'll drive you back to the port and you'll be sure to find something there'. With those words, he won himself a client.

The Korali Garden offers no breakfast; what it does have is a functioning and decently-equipped kitchen, A/C, a balcony with a view, an open view over the area and the sea in the distance.
It took 15-20 minutes to walk to the port; also 15 minutes to walk to St George beach. I could pick up the bus to the southern beaches down the street, outside the open-air cinema (warning: in high season the bus would be already packed). There were a couple of shops with good veggies for my brunch. And the neighbourhood was very quiet, no bars or loud restaurants around. And they drove me back to catch my boat out of Naxos too. Oh, and there's a pool out front among oleanders.
All for 37 euro a night (very spacious single room).

The place is run by two brothers and their elderly father, all very nice people. They also have two more hotels inside St George.

Leandros Hotel, Tinos: Traditional Greek Hotel

by steventilly

We had a great time here. Tinos is a wonderful island, a bit of the "unspoiled Greece", and the Hotel Leandros is one of those traditional Greek hotels. A little on the basic side, but clean, comfortable and above all, friendly. The family are so genuinely friendly and welcoming that it's as if you're staying as a true guest, rather than just another paying customer.
The price of the hotel was almost twice that of the one we had on Naxos, but if we came back to Tinos (and we plan to) we'd stay here again, rather than try to find something cheaper. As well as the friendliness of the place, its proximity to the town centre and above all else the port makes it almost priceless. You could literally sit in your room till your ferry docked.
The room was spotless, comfortable, the air-con worked and it had TV and fridge. The bathroom was "typically Greek" - no shower curtain, meaning that you had to evacuate the bathroom of anything you didn't want to get wet while you showered. This was the only place we stayed on this trip that was like this, and strange to say, we'd really missed it!

The warmth of the welcome; the typically Tiniot decoration (the rendering on the walls you will see in any Tiniot village); proximity to amenities.

Hotel Grotta, Naxos: Lovely Family Run Hotel

by steventilly

What a lovely place this is. Conveniently close to the centre of Naxos town and the port it provides an ideal base. Family run (as usual for Greece) by very friendly and competent people who are eager to make your stay a pleasant one. Our room was large and nicely furnished, the air-con really worked, and it had a fridge and TV. It also had a very large balcony which gave us a side sea view. Public areas included a lounge with views out to sea and the town.

It's in a lovely location, on the cliffs above the sea with nice views across the ocean and the town.
An "eat all you want" buffet breakfast is included in the price, as is free wi-fi access - and if you don't have your own laptop or other wi-fi enabled device, they'll lend you a laptop! For free!
The price was amazing. We booked through Travel Republic and got the room for Euro 38 per night for the two nights. Outstanding value for a place of this quality and convenience.

Sunset View, Parikia, Paros: Beautiful Apartments

by steventilly

Perfection!
A lovely apartment set in a very well built complex that had a good pool and fantastic views. Its name, "Sunset View" is not without reason, from the pool terrace you got a great view of the sunset as it went down just beyond the headland.
Rooms were spacious and spotlessly clean, nicely furnished and with daily maid service. The air-con really worked too, reducing the room to Arctic conditions if you would let it!

Just a lovely place. Nice to look at as well as nice to stay in, great views from the pool terrace, well run by the whole (very friendly) family, and oh so quiet - not near any noise whatsoever.
The only potential drawback is the uphill walk back from town for those less able on their feet. Thankfully, unlike our place in Mykonos, this is on quiet, largely traffic-free roads.

Paolas Studios, Mykonos: Great Apartments, Poor Location

by steventilly

On the face of it these apartments were great. Attractively built, nicely furnished, spotlessly clean, run by friendly people and only 10 to 15 minutes walk from Mykonos Town. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay there, but with one gripe. The walk back from town.
This is up quite a steep hill, not a problem in itself to us as we're fit and active, but it could be a major problem to older people or those with difficulties. What makes it worse though is that it's up a major road that for the most part has no pavement, and Greek drivers, or for that matter any 16 year old on a scooter for the first time in their life, are not renowned for their driving skills. I can't imagine it would be much fun walking children or pushing pushchairs up this hill given the traffic situation. You could get a taxi (if you can find one - see elsewhere) or a bus. We often got off the bus close to the apartments on our way back from days out, and that certainly made it better. Coming just from town though, Euro 1.40 for a 2 minute bus ride might not seem like good value, it's up to you.

There's nothing really "unique" about the place. It ticks most of the boxes for what you would want from reasonably priced self-catering accommodation. The pool is just a "cooling off pool" rather than something you could really swim in, but that's true of a lot of places these days, and its proximity to the main road means the pool is not really a quiet place to relax. Plenty of people still enjoyed a few hours a day around the pool though, including ourselves once or twice.
If I went back to Mykonos (and I plan to) I'd probably stay here again. "Better the devil you know" and there were no problems at all with the place - except that walk back from town!

Aroma Suites: Free airport & port shuttle!

Oh by the way, Aroma Suites' owner in Santorini, will pick you up from the airport or port for free. That saves money and he is very informative and reliable!

Camp on Ano Coufonissi: Rootical camp on small island

by indramix

A small camp in the edge of the village with a wooden opened tavern and chill music. It looks like a festival camp, only without music. Price was 5 euro for a day (I was there 2005.), young open-minded neo hippies, clean toilets, near beach.

We didn't have any plan where we would sleep on the island, so when we arrived, came a small truck, and people from the ferry started to putting their backpacks on it, and we do the same.
We came at a camp by night, and when we woke up, we realized that the camp was almost on a beach which was long and sandy. We thought we we were still dreaming.

Contiki Resort Mykonos: Contiki Resort on Mykonos

by marybellone

We stayed here our last week of our trip as kind of a relaxing end. The hotel and beach were very nice. We were dissapointed with what was not included in the "all inclusive " package that you must get there. Also, this resort is far away from the main town. There are plenty of buses during the day but at night there is only one bus after 10:00 and tickets sell fast.
** Also, we took the ferry there and they were supposed to provide a transfer to the hotel. The transfer never showed and we were forced to walk for a while until a taxi picked us up. What we didn't know was that taxi's are very hard to get on this island!

Aigiali and Katapola campgrounds: Camping in Amorgos

by IoannaE

Amorgos, being the chillout capital of the Cyclades, attracts a lot of campers. I stayed in Katapola (the main port) for a few days, then moved to Aigiali (pron. eh-yi-A-li). Both campgrounds get packed-out in August, so be sure you have an alternative if you're arriving in the first week or so - there's often a queue of people just off the boat!
Aigiali's grounds are nicer - more trees, much better facilities, a decent restaurant-cafe. Both Aigiali and Katapola Municipal Campground are very near the beach. The second Katapola campground is much better than rustic municipal one, but a up the hill from the main town - not convenient unless you plan to rent a moped (a good idea at any rate).
As for which of the two locations to choose as a base, it all depends - Aigiali is a lovely location, with hiking possibilities and a very good beach; but it's much more touristy than Katapola, which is also closer to the main town and the wild and rugged beaches on the other side of the island. I was glad I stayed in both.

Aigiali: Proximity to the beach, good shade (olive and orchard trees) spruced-up facilities, the option of staying in a rented room on the same site.

Katapola Municipal Campground: proximity to beach and main port, better transport connections to main town, famous beaches and monastery; inferior facilities.
