Wana help me have a great summer?...PLEASE!!!

by IRISHLASSIE

Hello!! I'm an Irish student heading to the party capital of Greece with a friend of mine for July and August. Just wondering if anyone knows how easy it is to get basic and affordable accomodation? Is the ferry service close to the airport in Athens (were getting in at 4a.m.)? Is Ios cheap (food, drink etc!)? Would you say we'd find accomodation pretty easily? Will it be the best summer of our lives?!!! Any info would be great, cheers!!!

Well my dear lassie :-) you said it yourself...
"the party capital of Greece "
Ios really turned to be like that lately. I used to hear from many people that Ios is great for young people but that was amongst Greeks...
Now since foreign tourists started to show up that equals to not so cheap accomodation (Ios was not that cheap anyway) but MANY more clubs and pubs!!!!
An indicative price about the living in Greece would be fags- £4.50 (6.26 Euros)here,
£1.80 in Greece=(2.50 Euros).
a drink is about the same price might be a bit more expensive...BUT if you have one drink in Greece is like having two or even three here. We dont have measures in Greece, the amount of alcohol served is up to the taste of the barman. Generally Greece is much cheaper.
The Athens airport is nowhere near the ferry service. The airport is far away from Athens anyway. The cheapest way for you is to take the airport bus from there and go to Athens city centre. Thats if you dont have a lot of stuff with you and you can carry them around- and you will do a lot of walk. You can ask the help desk prefferably for more accurate directions!!!
You will find accomodation but it would be easier if you already booked something. Ios is going to be packed!!!! It would more expensive because July/August is high season anyway!!!.
Now if it going to be the best summer of your life,.... I don't know!!!
Try to make it!!!!

ps. beware the greek predators that are out on the pull :-)))))) lol!!!!

Best of luck and I do hope that is going to be the best summer in your lives!!!

Take the airport bus into Athens & from there take the metro to the ferry port at Pireas (it's spelt somthing like that). I went about 5/6 years ago in August & there were plenty of people there when the boats came in offering accomodation. One thing though - you can either stay near the beach & then have an uphill walk (there's lots of steps) up to the town in the evening if you want to go to the clubs & bars (there's a bus too) or else stay in the town but have walk to the beach.

We had a discussion about airport and seaports of Athens two weeks ago at Greece forum:

I think it will help you.

I went at the end of the season last year (Late August early Sept) and had a blast
at different times of the season there is a lack of sleazy mediteranean guys and more of the aussie/america/canada/uk/sweden type crowd
i stayed at a place called george and irenes for i think 9euro a night in a small dorm room with ensuite. very conveniently located.
getting off the bus youre likly to get mobbed by the sign boys trying to get you to stay at their place, so finding accommodation shouldnt be a hassle, but rather choosing which one to go with!
i found prices to be pretty standard, and often cheaper to other areas of europe. ios is one of the cheaper islands as it has no airport of its own
i got a taxi from the ferry to the airport, i think it took me about 20mins

Lucky you! I have been to Ios four times. It's been a few years so I'm not updated on prices, but you are going to have the time of your life. For a nice hotel try Kolitzani View. It's only two minutes from Chora and you will be able to sleep at night (But why sleep on Ios) On your first morning go up early and take lots of pictures in the beautiful Chora (don't miss the famous palm tree), because you will be sleeping late for the rest of the visit... You will be spending the afternoons down at Milopota Beach sunbathing, eating, drinking, partying until it's time for a nap. After a cool shower it's time for dinner in Chora and after that head for the main square. There's bars and pubs and disco's everywhere. I recommend Slammer Bar, Satisfaction, Undergound and of cource the Irish Pub. On my first visit I managed ten days of non-stop action, including a night on the beach with a greek goddess! As for the ferry, just take the bus or a taxi to Pireus. If there's no ferry leaving when you get there have a beer or two at the big cafe, get to know some other Ios visitors and let the party begin...

Travel Tips for Ios

YIALOS - THE PORT

by LoriPori

One of the biggest natural harbours in the Aegean, is the Port town of YIALOS. To the left side of the Port stands St. Irini - Agia Irini - a chapel of amazing beauty, built in the 17th century. Cool yourself at the beach of Gialos to the right of the port, where you will also find many restaurants, bars and cafe's. The ferries make frequent stops here.
