Ios to Santorini

by lzlzlz

Hi,
I will be in Ios in the beginning of July for 3 nights, but will not have time to visit Santorini for a full day /night. I was hoping to take a day trip to santorini because I heard it's beautiful. Is this feasible? (based on time it takes to get there and back and time to check out the island for a few hours). Any idea on cost of ferry? Thanks very much in advance.

Because all departure times aren't available right now for July you'll have to check in a month or so on www.gtp.gr or go into a ticket office once you're on Ios to determine whether or not the ferry connections will allow a daytrip, but it's a good possibility. It takes about 1.5-2 hours to get between the islands on a conventional car ferry, 45 minutes on a highspeed. Expect to pay between 12-18 euro, each way for an economy ticket.

It would be far more efficient to take the ferry straight to Santorini for one night and then a late ferry to Ios the next day.

Ferries suitable/early enough for daytrips from Ios to Santorini are quite rare simply because ferries take so long to get there from the Piraeus area, and you are only on Ios for 2 days. Athinios the port is awkwardly placed so you waste even more time going back and forth from there.

You can't make up extra time by daytripping, you lose time by doubling up on the travelling time.

Our fourth Port of Call
Located in the South Cyclades, 113 nautical miles from Piraeus, IOS (108 sq. km.) is blessed with countless chapels, olive trees, vineyards, small attractive coves, crystal clear sea and superb sandy beaches.
The island's history goes back to prehistoric times. According to legend, Homer was buried at Plakatos in the north of the island. The sites of Ios include a Hellenistic tower at Plakatos, the remains of an ancient aquaduct at Agia Theodoti and traces of an ancient temple at Psathi.
Ios can be reached by ferry boat.
