RE: money

How is anyone supposed to answer that? You don't offer any insight into your preferences, the time of year you plan to be there, whether or not you're a backpacker or intend to use luxury hotels. I suggest you start over and state your maximum daily room budget, if you want self-catering rooms, hotel-style services (more expensive) or hostel/campground information. Places with swimming pools are usually more expensive, are you willing to pay more for a pool? Anything else you can add to give us more insight into your 'travel style' will help us to make informed recommendations. It would hardly do you any good to get recommendations for luxury 5* hotels if you plan on sleeping in a tent.

Travel Tips for Mykonos

Easter celebration

by mindcrime

If you visit Mykonos during easter time you will have an opportunity to see the locals doing something that has nothing to do with tourism! lol Easter Sunday called Pascha in greek and it celebrates the resurrection of Jesus. It’s very important for the orthodox not only that day but the whole Easter season that lasts 40 days but in ourdays most of the people pay attention for one week (the week before easter Sunday when the schools are closed). It’s a movable public holiday and most of the times it’s on April. Most of the greek families in mainland wait for that day because of the famous traditional custom of eating roasted lamb. In Cyclades islands that wasn’t a local custom but I noticed that some restaurants in Mykonos done it on the beach for the tourists!! Although the majority celebrates it as a non religion day Easter is the most important festival of orthodox church (more than Christmas etc)

In Mykonos on great and holy Friday the local women are on the streets around 21:00 singing some gospel songs and it’s nice to watch the ceremony even if you are not a believer. The small alleys of Chora was really packed with people following them from the one chapel to the other. On great and holy Saturday it will be nice for you to be near a church. You will see all light in the church go down around 23:30 and a new flame will come from the priest (supposed to be from Jerusalem) and he will give light to the candles of the believers that wait outside holding candles. Then the priest reenters the church and sings the divine liturgy until 2am. From my experience almost everyone is going back home at 00:30 to have the traditional meal! :) And of course everyone is waiting the day after for the lambs! I hope you are not a vegetarian visiting Greece that day! lol

Scooter Rental

by DrexelDragon

I inquired about a scooter rental. I was told that it would be 15euro per day. I was also told that a license regulated for motorcycle operation was req'd, but that did not seem to be a problem until I mentioned it.

Prior to going to the island, I had read and seen other offers for scooters for 30euro per day. Perhaps that is the peak season rate.

There are places everywhere for scooter rentals. I'd say shop around...

Windmills of Mykonos

by al_mary

We travel to Holland every year,
home of the windmills, and we
were very surprised to see some
windmills on a Greek Island.
From as early as the 16th century,
one of the most popular recognized
landmarks of Mykonos have been it's
windmills up on the hill .....

Due to it's geographic position, Mykonos was situated on major
sea trade-route which at one time joined Venice, the gateway of
Europe, to Asia.

The need to refine grain and compact it for transport combined
with an ample year round supply of wind made Mykonos the
perfect location. Easy access to the harbor was necessary so
most of the island's mills were positioned in or around the main
port with the highest concentration covering the entire western
portion of town.

With the coming of industrialization the windmills importance
began to decline as well as their numbers. Today only a fraction
remains of what was once an active era in Mykonian history.

DELOS MOSAICS

Many of the houses and structures still have some of their original mosaic tiled floors. The artistry of the mosaics is superb. This one is from the House of the Actors. They are in their original locations, inside the rooms.

Mykonos

"Days in Mykonos"

Mykonos is very beautiful, however, in some way it was built for tourists. Colourful buildings, shops, shops, shops...

In order to go to Delos island (Greek ruins), we have to stay overnight in Mykonos because there are only morning ferry available to Delos (9am, 10:15am & 11am). The last ferry back from Delos is around 15pm.

Mykonos have some nice beaches (but again many tourists) as Paradise, Souperparadise, Platy Yagos, Paranger...Walking from Platy Yago to Paranger beach was nice. We reached the rocky edge of Paranger, it was wonderful feeling...

"come in the wind..."

Reaching the edge of southern Mykonos island - Paranger after 30min walking from Platy Yagos. It was great feeling sitting at the highest point...
