Sunset at the Apollo's Temple Gate
by SirRichard
One of the most beautiful sunsets in Greece is the one you can enjoy watching the sun disappear through the Gate of the Apollo Temple, in Naxos.
Not as crowded as Oia's Santorini sunsets, and in a natural environment, a real must when in Naxos...
The Kouros of Naxos
by snorril
There are at least two of these Kouros on Naxos. They are believed to been made in the 6th century BC and are thought to have represented gods or heroes.
This one is near the town of Melanes, just lying there in a field. It was never finished but still makes a impression, especially its size.
Ayios Nikodimos Festival
by ngrivas
The "Ayios Nikodimos" festival is the biggest celebration in Naxos island and it is dedicated to Saint Nikodimos who was born in Naxos. The festival takes place on the 14th of July every year and it starts at the big church which has his name. Priests are taking his icon all around the city and the people are following, when the icon is back to the church the sky gets full of fireworks and the port road gets packed from people. This is something you must see if you are in Naxos at this time of the year.
Mountain Biking and Trek
by sabrepoint
Hire a bike in Naxos (a couple of good places there) and head south along coast. Plenty of off-road paths through cane fields and along beaches. A few km south you can find a few farm tracks over hills. We took no maps as usual, and got lost as usual. But great fun. Sometimes unsure whether of not we were on some farmer's private tracks - we got interesting stares from the livestock! But eventually when you come across a real road you can see which way to head back to town. Great day's outing in the countryside - just us and the cows!
We found Naxos pleasantly less crowded than other islands. On another day we took a local bus from Naxos town into the hinterland east, hopped off and walked several km back to town. Definite need for maps there, as you're wandering through the mountains! (and little villages).

There is a very good bus service covering all beaches and villages. There is also a minibus service (free of charge) which covers all main points of Naxos Town (Hora).
Cars, bikes and bicycles are available for hire but drive Suspiciously ...
