More about Chelidonia Villas
Incredible Caldera Views
My family (3 adults) and I spent 1 week in a villa in early October 2004. The rooms were very clean and had all the ammenities (internet access, kitchen, and air conditioning) you could ask for on a quiet and relaxing vacation. The owners went out of their way to make us feel at home and make sure that we were comfortable during our stay- a hallmark of true Greek hospitality. This is more than you can say for some larger impersonal hotels elsewhere. The view was breathtaking to wake up to every morning and far exceeded our expectations. The quality of these villas is a real bargain; other hotels on the island are comparable in views and amenities but not for the same reasonable price. Considering the view, the artsy neighborhood location, convenient location to public transportation (15 mins to Fira by bus), and friendly staff, I would definitely recommend these villas to anyone wishing to make their experience in Santorini extra memorable.
Incredible Caldera views, very comfortable accomodations and friendly, hospitable owners made our honeymoon to Santorini absolutely perfect. The terrace is the perfect place to sip wine and watch the sunset.
It is very hard to describe what a special place Chelidonia Villas is, our hosts cold not do enough for us and the villas and the view were something else. Our stay of 6 days was part of an 8 week trip to many countries but this would rate as one of the best experiences we have ever had,all the good things you read on trip advisor are true. We stayed in mid Sept and the weather was just great not so busy and with our rental car found this to be a great base to explore all of the great ruins and beaches Santorini has to offer. Believe all that you read, go and experience something special. Des & Faye Stewart- New Zealand.
Keep this Little Gem a Romantic Secret!
We stayed here in Late September 2004 with high hopes for the Chellidonia and were not dissapointed. Santorini struck us initially as a typically scenic Greek Island, but Oia is exceptional. Every corner you turn is a photograph waiting to to be taken (and upon our return home the jealousy of friends and family of our photos was hillarious!) If you like picturesque rustic scenes then look no further. The cave houses are very cute and have a refreshing traditional cool white and blue decor. Outside your little front door is a stunning view of the blue caldera. Add this to Greek Yoghurt and Honey in the morning on the terrace or a glass of the local Halaris Rose wine in the evening and you have the perfect Greek retreat. Our hosts were very friendly and gave us a great tip for a little restaurant called Sunset Tavern down near Amoudi beach where you can enjoy fish freshly caught while watching the sun go down over the Caldera and passing tall ships. Very Romantic.......we miss the Chellidonia!
My wife and I stayed at this incredible hotel in September 03 for our wedding. We stayed here for 9 days and I honestly can't imagine staying anywhere else. Our "cave" was so cozy, with a bed we didn't want to get out of in the morning and a good sized bathroom. The view from our veranda took our breath away every morning as we sat and had coffee, getting ready for the day ahead. Since we were having our wedding on the island, many of our guests stayed in other hotels around oia and we honestly we feel like Chelidonia was far and away the most romantic and ideally situated. If you go to Santorini, stay here. By the way Tryantaphallys(?) and Erika were incredibly helpful.
Wonderful Place to Stay
Four of us (all adults) stayed here in the early summer of '04 and found it absolutely delightful. Our hosts-Triantafyllos and Erika-were always helpful, always accessible, and wonderful to chat with. The view from our apartment was stunning, the rooms clean and very quiet, but with the village just steps away. Triantafyllos gave us access to a computer for email and suggested some fun places to eat. We had a wonderful week on Santorini and can recommend Chelidonia Villas very highly, especially in terms of value, ambiance, and friendliness, with a total lack of pretence or commercialism. The best way to enjoy Oia!
Reasonable, Scenic and Clean
There are fancier places in Santorini. It doesn't have a pool and you will not be blown away when you walk in the room. But, the room (it's actually a cave) is neat and clean and perfectly suitable.
Again, it doesn't compare with the Grand Bretagne in Athens or the Amphitryon in Nafplion, but you're not going to Santorini to hang out in the room. I felt much better about spending $150/ night at this place and being footsteps away from the amazing sunsets than spending $300+ for a room that made me feel like staying in it.
If you want luxury, go elsewhere and pay triple.
Oh, by the way, the owners are extremely friendly and VERY helpful.
These cave villas are very, very nice. The inside is more spacious than we expected, including a very large bathroom and a more than adequate kitchen area with a small refrigerator, coffeemaker, sink and propane stove, plus a dining table. Also the room was very quiet and comfortable. Of course, the terrace is the highlight -- a nice, tranquil place to sit and soak up the sun and stare out at the ocean and the island views. We stayed there for five nights in May 2005. We had read many reviews and guides that said Ioa was the best place to stay on Santorini (as opposed to the much busier Fira), and while Ioa and the Chelidonia Villas proved to be a spectacular setting, we met other friends and travelers who found nice, clean, reasonably spacious hotel rooms in other areas such as Fira or even Perissia for less than half the price we were paying. Try to decide what's most important to you during your stay in Santorini: a caldera view room is wonderful, but you can also take all sorts of walks, go to restaurants or wineries or go on boats and get those same stunning views for free. Other places may not be quite as unique or scenic as Chelidonia, but some aren't bad at all -- and probably a much better deal for budget-conscious travelers. Also, we learned that if you stay in Ioa, you'll end up spending some money (2 Euros per r/t bus, about 10 euros for taxi) and/or time taking public transport back and forth to other places on the island...However, if you opt for Ioa and decide to plunk down the money, Chelidonia Villas will not disappoint you -- and for caldera views in Ioa it probably is still one of the best values.
A rustic retreat
In direct contrast to the oft featured hip hotels with stunning infinity pools and tuxedoed waiters with slick hair, Chelidonia villas seeks to provide a more authentic experience of life in Santorini. "I was born in that house", proprietor Mr Triantaphyllos proclaims, gesturing at one of the villas offered for rent. The villas themselves have a pleasant lived-in feel and are clean yet functional. If you desire a floodlit jacuzzi overlooking the Aegean for three times the cost, Chelidonia villas isn't for you. Yet you still get the same stunning caldera views.
Mr Triantaphyllos was the perfect host, assisting us with our shipping needs as well as providing a complimentary jug of homemade vinsanto wine. Again, the villas aren't for anyone. If you're taken by more upmarket options like Perivolas and Katikies, you may not enjoy Chelidonia as much.
The BEST hotel in Santorini
We stayed at Chelidonia Villas for 4 nights for our honeymoon and it was our favorite of all hotels on our trip. It is along the main pedestrian road and is near many restaurants and shops. The cave villas are nicely decorated and very unique. The view from the patio is breathtaking as you can see the whole caldera, very relaxing to sit in the chair and read your favorite book. If you don't like crowds, we recommend staying in Oia as opposed to Fira. The sunset in Oia is truly amazing and can be seen after a very short 5 minute walk from the hotel. The hotel even offers free internet access by their computer or by wireless. The owners Triantaphylous and Erika are the nicest people and will attend to your every need. They arranged multiple taxi rides to/from the port and airport for us. The price is very reasonable too. We definitely hope to return to Santorini in the future and we know where we will stay for sure.
