The Question - ride or walk?
by V_Minx
It is a VERY long hike up from the Ammoudi fishing village to the city of Oia on top of the cliffs. You have to choices - walk thousands of stairs or pay to ride a donkey.
PersonalIy, I decided to try the donkey ride. The animals know what they are doing, but if you are feint of heart, walking is the better option. My donkey nearly brushed me off the walls at times and the in other instances I thought he was walking much too close to the edge of the path. We laughed about the ride at the top, but there wasn't much joking as we ascended.
Maria & the Olympic Spirit
by Sharrie
You must meet her when you go to Oia. I was having a little problem navigating through the maze of Oia searching for Amoudi. I came by this shop that sells souvenir items for the Olympic. I found her! A truely marvelous person! Godsent! Her name is Maria... aha, with that name ;-)
Ok, I asked for my direction & I was hungry, so I took off. The journey to Amoudi wasn't an easy one. Even the local (I met another lady on the way down & saw her again while leaving Oia & she asked me if I survived the climb! lol...) proclaimed so. Anyhow, it was very hot... & I was almost breathless when I came back to Maria. So, she was kind enough to invite me in & we chatted ... for at least 30 minutes. It was very comfortable chatting with her. She's truly a gorgeous person. We exchanged emails & hopefully we'll see one another again sometime :-)
Oia, were the sun paints the sky red...

"Oia..."
Oia is at the northernmost tip of the island of Thira. It is a small town, with narrow streets, white houses, blue-roofed churches, beautiful bell-towers...
It is the best place to go at mid-afternoon, walk in the streets, maybe some shopping of handi-crafts, and then relax for about an hour watching the sunset...
"The Sunsets..."
Oia is famous for different reason, but the first and most important one is the wonderful sunsets you can see from the cliff.
Oia is famous for its church roofs, for its mill, for the white houses, the old castle...
But specially for the sunsets...
