not so good
So to be honest I would absolutely not recommend going to the Pyrgaki hotel – well at least for the coming months. We were booked in as part of our package of island hoping. To be honest (again) it probably was the only 3 star hotel that was open when we were visiting. It is situated on a small hill about 1,5 kilometres from Parikia town and the ferry. Because it is on a hill you do have views of the town (in one direction). The hotel has 25 rooms, a restaurant and an outdoor pool. There is free transfer to the ferry or the airport.
Unique Quality: Sounds lovely so what was the problem? Well they were busy knocking down/building while we were there to start with. Although I must admit they did only seem to be one at the most two men working and they did have lots of coffee breaks!! We walked into reception to book in and there were lots of chairs and tables stacked there, the following morning we saw that the dining room was also half full of “new furniture” being stored there. Our room was in two parts the front part consisted of a dining chair, a sink and fridge and light complete with broken glass lampshade. The bedroom had a very small double bed and one chair and a dressing table. There were the holders for a shelf (level with Koos’ head) but no shelf. We hung our towels on them so Koos could not walk into them and blind himself. The shower/toilet was clean (only just) but there was a puddle of water around the toilet all the time (there was a drain there from the shower). The outdoor pool was covered with a layer of green goo luckily it was too cold to even think about using it. We had a couple of stairways to go down to get to our room and they were unlit at night so one evening Koos fell down a couple of steps. Breakfast was OK but the coffee was cold or tepid each day and the bread not really fresh. I think the owner thought he was doing us a favour when he put on the music each morning as we entered but it was so loud! He told us very proudly that he was renovating and hoped to be a 4 star resort next year but to do major building work while guests are there is not really on. We were going to be taken to the ferry at 11 on the last morning but we could not stand the noise and decided we would rather walk into town than sit there waiting for two hours. To be honest he did transfer us back to town early when we said we were going early. So if you go first check out if the renovations are finished!!
Luckily we do not spend all our time in hotels while on holiday.
