Re: how to get to the airport

I investigated this on our last trip to Santorini- yes, there is.
The transfer time between Fira and the airport is about twenty minutes by bus. There are buses and a taxi rank outside the terminal that will take you into Thira or wherever.
Some hotels also offer transport by mini buses so perhaps you could contact your place of accommodation and query this.

In April 2010, the taxi/minibus I grabbed at the airport charged me 11 euros plus tip. The bus isn't terribly regular, I seem to recall seeing 1 every 2 hours or so? I could be mistaken about that...

Re: how to get to the airport

I believe it depends on the time you will be there.
If you go there now you will see a very different Santorini from what is going on during summer. Of course you might like all this quiteness and not the crowds. The 11 euros is nothing, however be sure to book a hotel that is appropriate with the island. I mean to get a nice picture of Santorini, it is preferable to book a nice hotel with a nice view. I mean it is worth spending a bit more just for that....Check out my Santorini pages to get more tips before you travel there. Contact me if you have more questions.
There is a bus and you will find the time table on my tips.

There are regular buses From Fira to the Airport and just about everywhere on Santorini. They all start in Fira and fan out. Mid May the airport bus is roughly hourly. Check at the Fira bus station which will have the updated timetables at the time. Times are also on main bus stops.

Travel Tips for Santorini Island

A ROMANTIC HOLIDAY FOR EVERYONE!

by listenandlearn

We arrived nearly midnight here at Fira. It was dark and there were locals leading us to the bus that takes everyone to the little town called Fira. We got on the bus and packed with young students so it made it even more fun. It was not such a long bus ride, as a matter of fact many where standing up on the bus aile. As we approached the top of the island, it started becoming more zig-zaggy...if there is such a word “zig-zag”!
Upon unbarking the bus, there you will see and hear many sale people convencing you to stay at their villa. Places as such because we are confident there will be room as it was not a holiday, so, we preferred to see the villa we were staying instead of booking like many people did. So, we choose one that was about 3 – 5 minutes easy walking to the busy town. This Fira is full time or big time very touristic! Many business has been established, summer it’s packed! Many Americas, people from Brazil, Argentina, Dominicans, Puerto Ricans, Asians and name it you are more likely to find them in these great place.
Taking photos where one of everyone’s favourite! All your photos come out to be perfect shots! The wash out buildings of one or two stories high are just unspeakably beautiful! We just love our visit here at Fira!
There are many and many more are being built and fully equipped lodgings and for all budgets. There are even camping if that is your preference. Restaurants! So many! What we did is one day we had breakfast at a family home restaurant, then lunch at another place which showed us discounted but very well prepared and complete meal for only 18 Euros! Then dinner we would have it at a sort of bar/restaurants where they served “Spanish Tapas”. We don’t recall having to eat a one place twice as there were just so many depending on your pocket, your mood and the crowd in it as you walk in...Since we travel very moderately we try just everything and it was one way to even enjoy it more so.
To keep tourists busy there are dun bugyies, boat rides, bikes and for us that love to dancing, we took our little siesta in the afternoon and just spend few hours in the disco or bars which we certainly enjoyed.
One of my wish is to be able to bring our children to Greece and take them to Santorini, Fira and other smaller island... We were schedule for only 3 nights in Santorini and we just had to extend it for 12 days. It is nearly like a dream rest place to be with the people you love to be at all time. Picture taking was alway but alway a perfect shot! The sunset setting was beautiful and sunrise was just as worth taking a movie of it. Most of the expectators next to us watching the sun down were Japanese and as the sunrise was starting to disappear all the Japanese tourists were clapping their hands...It's so just beautiful gestures!

THIRASSIA

VT Pirate ship trip to Thirassia
Off Santorini, near Oia, THIRASSIA is the largest of a chain of islets formed by volcanic activity and the only one inhabited. It is across the Caldera from Santorini.
It's sole village, Horio, is a pretty place with whitewashed houses, reached by a flight of 250 steps from the landing-place.
On Saturday, a large group of VTers went on the Island of Thirassia as part of the Pirate Ship trip. We all went up by donkeys (see my "Donkey" travelogue ) up to the Panorama Restaurant where we had lunch of traditional Greek food. There was amazing views from up there.

The Caldera

by Aggeliki

The Volcano or Caldera is one of the favourite attractions of the island. These two small islands from lava called Palia Kameni and Nea Kameni (which mean Burned islands). When you arrived by the boat on the shore of the island of Nea Kameni you must walk about 20 minutes to see the volcano's crater and some holes where some steam come from. After the boat will arrive to Palia Kameni where there are some spring water.

Not Just For The Tourists!

by johngayton

The local mules aren't just there for the benefit of us foot-weary tourists. They actually are used as a local means of goods transportation.

This might look a bit abusive but for those "donkey-huggers" out there - if the mules weren't useful they'd be in that tin of dog meat you're now opening to feed your "rescue dog".

Windmills

by BurgerQueen

On the Gavrilos hill, there are 8 old windmills that have now be abandoned. The wind here blows strongly, and the windmills have been repared several times before being finally replaced by new technologies.
There is nothing much to see here, but the atmosphere is perfect to take pictures!
